6BR and Varget?

Please don't shake yer head at me, this is gonna sound rookie-ish. :-[ I load for 12 other rifles, but I'm entering new territory here. ;D

It seems to me most of the info on this site, 6BR loads is OLD. I just built my first 6BR, and broke in the barrel with mild(?) loads. Now I'm gonna start load development.

Lapua brass, Varget, Rem 7-1/2 BR primers, and 105 VLD's. Jam plus .005"

I'm loaded up from 29.6 to 30.4, in 2/10 gr increments, ready for the range.

Am I missing something on the bottom or the top? How high should I be looking to go? I'm gonna take the chrono with me, but at 5 degrees F, it's only gonna give me a general idea. I'll watch for the usual signs too.

But, what are you guys that are shooting 6 BR's nowadays shooting on the top end for charge? If you don't want to give me your secret load, should I be loading a bit higher in charge weight? Thanks for helping out.

You are on the right track.. Something to think about: Try CCI 450's if you are not satisfied with the Rems and Also try seating the 105 VLD's JUST (2-3K) off the lands if where you got'em 'taint working out the way you like.. other than that, you are spot on..

Thats what I do . Looks good. Find the charge that shoots good and play with seating depth

30 gr of varget with 105 gr berger hybrids touching lands bout good as it gets, go up or down a little see how your gun does

Sounds right on track.
Mine hit on 30.2 with the 105s just touching not jammed.
2/10ths at a time is fine. Nothing wrong with that at all
Im using cci450s

Al,

You're in the right ballpark. I put a 6BR barrel on my old savage last summer for my kids to use.

I found a load somewhere about 29.6 (but I was using hybrids, jumped .020").

Shoots lights out; my 9yo shot a 197-12x score his very first time with it @600.

Every one of my 6BR's using 8 twist Kreigers with a .237 bore have shot the best using neck turned Lapua brass (.269 neck chamber) 30.5 grains of Varget, CCI 450's, pointed Berger 105 VLD's soft seated into the lands. 2940 fps 26 inch BBL.

Danny

The tried and true suggested load of 30 grs. of Varget works fine in all 6 of my 8 twist chamberings. CCI BR4 or CCI 450 primers, Berger 105 gr. #24428, seated to touch, go out and shoot. Krieger and Bartlein barrels, 5 with .237" bores and 1 with .236".

CCI 450's are the...small rifle, magnum...correct?

There's only [one] CCI 450, right?

Am I gonna be the only person in the US that is using Rem 7-1/2 BR in the 6 BR, or are any of you guys having good results with them?

If they are the weak link in my load, that'll give nosulac an excuse to beat me this year. ;D

Al,

I'm using the 7 1/2s in the 6BR my kids shoot. I think I shot a 200-14x @ 600 with it before turning it over to them. Nothing wrong with those primers.

Besides Al, it's not me you need to worry about, it's my kids :)

Some people use the Rem. primers. I think more use the CCI BR4 or 450 primers. I like Varget, BR4 and 105 VLD hunting bullet 10 in. Matt

My rifle showed better results with H4895 than Varget. At various times and different barrels, CCI 450, Russian SRM and Fed 205M all worked well. The Rem 7½ is fairly hot but has also been reported as performing well in 6BR.

yukonal: By not mentioning Remington 7 1/2 primers I did not mean to give the impression they were not good. I've used them many times over the years problem free, just now have a very good supply of the BR4's & 450's, that work equally well.

Yes, 450's are the small magnum.

Hi guys what powder charge are you using with Berger 95gn VLD (Molly) and varget?

With my 105 hybrid (Molly) I run 31.0gr of Varget 20 thou off lands with BR4 primers

I own 4 --6BR's with 8 twist barrels. 3 of the guns love Varget with either CCI 450 or CCI BR4 primers. 30---30.4 grains of Varget with bullets from 80 grain up to 107 grain. The fourth gun is showing preference to H 4895. I just purchased several thousand Rem 7 1/2 primers so i will be testing to see if there is any difference besides $15 cheaper at the register compared to BR 4's

The point about the 450s and the Russian SRMs is that they are harder and resist primer piercing issues better.

Definitely a thread of interest to me as I recently got a new 6 BR barrel (actually Had a Dasher rechambered) and need to get moving on load development. Question for ya... H4895 & 8208 XBR seem pretty close in speed / burn rate... any one tried it in the 6 BR behind a 105-108?

I've run 8208 XBR behind 105 Hybrids. Excellent velocity and accuracy, but picky about primers. Not quite as forgiving as H4895 for similar results. I still have quite a bit and will probably revisit it in the near future.

If it's any help, I have been trying for 2 weeks to get my new 2nd 6br to shoot with varget. I tried all combinations known to man from powder charges to seating depths. Only tried 107 matchkings and 105 bergers as that's all I have. Very frustrating. I had one pound of h4895 kicking around and tried it today just because and started at 28 grains, 10 in the lands with the 107 match kings. Right at 28 grains blew varget's doors off in this rifle and I will work up to 29 grains next time out. My other rifle loves varget. I never even thought to try it because all I ever read is varget. Now my problem is I have 38 pounds of varget and 1 pound of h4895 and it's not easy to find in my neck of the woods right now.

Hello Steve,

Any guidance on starting load? The data on the Hodgdon site is fairly wussified compared to what I'm used to seeing in a custom-chambered 6 BR with a long barrel.

Thanks,

Monte
