6BR and 70 grain Berger

I am having a 6 mm, 14 twist Shilen barrel put on a Stiller Predator action. The chamber will be in 6mm BR with .040 throat. I am planning on using Berger 68 grain or 70 grain flat base bullets. Does anyone have any advice on powder and loads for this setup?

Thanks,

Cort

I have a Stiller Predator single shot 6BR. Krieger 1/14 twist. 26" bbl. I had good results using Lapua brass, CCI BR-4 primers, 30.0g Varget, OAL 2.146". Minimal throat. I have since moved on to varmint bullets such as V-maxes, and didn't test much with match bullets. I would guess that the load could be increased to 31.0-32.0g. On reviewing my targets, it seems that VVN135 shoots better in my rifle for every bullet type & weight I tried/compared. My .02...

Cort: You may want to consider a zero freebore, especially since you'll be using the shorter, lightweight bullets. With zero you'll be able to seat the bullets with the base at or very close to the neck/shoulder junction, just a bit in front of it, to avoid the donut if one should form. With a short throat you'll be able to seat the bullet further out in the case neck to touch the lands, as erosion develops. I started one of my 6BR chambers with .104" of freebore, and now at 1240 rds. fired am reaching the point where the 95 gr. Berger VLD's are nearing the case mouth when seated to touch, where they must be for best accuracy. Sent the reamer back to Pacific with a dummy round, bullet seated as described above ( 95 Berger/ 95 Sierra), and future chambers will be cut with zero FB. The most accurate bullet in both of my 1-14's with .265" tight necks is the 68 Berger #24411, seated to touch with 30 grs. of N133, Fed 205/205M.

I second that about freebore. With 14" twist you won't be shooting heavy bullets. My 6BR is 14twist, the chamber has 0 freebore......touching the lands a 70TNT (flat base) seats to about 2/3 down the neck. A boattail 70 - BalTip or custom - seats to the base of the neck, which I think is perfect. A 55 or 58 will seat about 1/2way down the neck and those things work really well in the 6BR....very accurate with a lot of speed.

I have tryed the 68gr bergers and the 80gr bergers also the 70gr sierra blitz king i use vv135 all three bullets shoot very well in my gun, My rifle is a bat action kriger barrel with a 13 twist.

My 13.5 twist works much better with the 70 grain Sierra Matchkings. Disappointing results so far with the Berger 68 grain bullets, so be sure to give both a try.

So far I've gotten best accuracy with around 30 grains of N133 touching the lands. (Frank's recommended load!) N135 is a close second and requires more powder. Varget and light bullets work okay in my gun, but not in the same league as the N133 and N135 powders.

Ackman mentioned 58s and I assume he meant the V-Max. That bullet has been an accurate, consistent performer for me in 6mm in 9", 10" and 12" twists. It does require a short throat. A lot of shooters report good results with it. In 6mm Remington at just over 4000, they reduce crows to feathers.
