6br, 6brx, 6dasher out to 1000yds??

I've got a 14 twist 6mm br and love it. I'm wanting to do something for long range also. I have my 6mm br dies so lets put that into the equation also. Should I go with a faster twist 6mm br, a 6brx, or a 6 dasher? It's for a savage and for local compitition, not a 4000.00 dollar rig. I have no experience reading wind conditions and am wanting to start here. Will it be possible to compete with the same cartridge at 500yds. as 1000, or would they be a seperate item??
Probably sounds like a pretty stupid set of questions to people who are already familiar with things, but like I said, I want to start learning... tootalloutdoors

I'd go with the 6 Dasher. I just built one on a Remington action and Richard's Custom Rifles stock, and cannot be more pleased. The performance at 600 yards with the 107 SMK's and 105 AMax's has been spectacular. I am getting 3070FPS with the SMK, and 1090 with the AMax. This extrapolates to excellent performance at 1000, but I have yet to test it at that range. Granted, a 6.5-284 will shoot inside it at 1000, but not by all that much, and the Dasher is much more accurate,as a rule), has lower component cost, less recoil, and the barrels last a lot longer. Dies are available from Redding on a semi-custom basis.

My website, link below) has a page detailing the build up of my Dasher, and some data relating to loading and on-target performance.

Hope that this helps!

Cheers,

Right O.K. I did check it out. I'm sold on the dasher idea. I need to find a place to buy a barrel to thread onto my savage and I'll be on my way. Any ideas? I want to use a barrel nut. I've got a couple of e-mails out to see if they have reamers.

Total,

The Dasher or BRX definitely has more zip than a std 6BR, but if you won't be doing a lot of shooting beyond 800 yards, perhaps all you need is a long-freebore 6BR barrel. Get a 28-30" tube, run RL15 and you should be at 2900+ without much difficulty. No fire-forming and you can use your existing dies.

If you are shooting primarily at 800-1000 then maybe you'd want to go with a 6-6.5x47 or 6XC. It looks like that should give you an 80-100 fps edge over the Dasher, but then again, you'll be using quite a bit more powder. There's no free lunch.

I can tell you that the Pac-Nor pre-fitted Savage barrel on my 223AI is a real shooter. Give them a call and see what they can do for you. Or, you can get a smith to chamber the barrel from your choice of manufacturer for about the same cost, give or take. Either way, installing the barrel is a snap.

Techshooter & Moderator:

With the 6BRX you can use standard 6BR dies backed out. And take a standard .243, .260, 7mm08, or .308 sizing die and remove the decaping pin and use it as a body die on the 6BRX case.

So let's see if I understand this. On the brx I can use the redding 6mmbr dies I already have. Just in a backed off position. Then when I go to load my existing 6mm br I can set them back up and run them like I do now. The die itself isn't going to have to be machined and then not work for the 6br? Tootalloutdoors

I have to admit - techshooter and his doggone 6mm Dasher have made quite an impression at our 600 yard prone matches in October and November... Very nice rifle - and I don't think it's even beginning to stretch it's legs at 600 yards... Regards, Guy

I Have 2 6BRX, ones is my Varmint gun now. the other is full House 17 lb 600 & 1000 yd benchrest gun. The brx can be loaded 6BR dies. I got 200 f/s more over the 6Br with the same barrel, by just punching the chamber. Richard's custom Rifle has done all the work.
