6brx starting point

This is my first post so be easy on the simple ,Gday from Gods great garden ,I have just had a 6brx built on a barnard p ,maddco 30 in brl in 1/8 and f class stock nf 12-42 br .My question for the brains trust is regarding a starting load with rl 15 ,I would be using 103 grn vld by copperhead ,this will be for 400 to 900 yards . I understand that the 6brx is similar to 6dasher I would just feel more at ease finding out from blokes who shoot them.

Mark,
Welcome to the forum, I have a 6brx, I shoot 34.5 grains of Varget in it with a 107 SMK, I have shot the same amount of RL-15 without problems but it is a little hotter, I started off with 31.5 and worked up and settled on 33.5 I think it was. You should be fine starting off with 31 or so now that is after it is fireformed When still in the 6br form probably 29.0 grains to fire form with a flat base bullet jammed hard, I use over .030 jam but fdshuster is using .010 or .012 with good results, hope this helps some and good luck.

mark 32.5 gr. rl15 &lapau brass cci450 mag primer&105vlbarely touching rifling or 33.2 gr varget same primer &brass as above i dont shoot 107 sierras except to fireform with but these loads work well in my brx try jumping the 105vld bergers if you shoot them never know some people are having great success 20&30 thou jump thanks &good luck with your brx hard caliber to beat

Been shooting a BRX for 2 yrs now. 1:8, 26 in barrel using 33.2 Varget, 105 VLD Berger's jumped .030, Tula Primer, Lapua Brass. 3030 fps, SD 7, ES 15. Shoots high 190's at 600 and low 190's at 1000. I'm very happy with this gun. Take your time with your load development and read http://bergerbullets.com/Information/Lines%20and%20Designs.html if you're going to use bergers. Read the section on VLD Bullet Design. Good luck and enjoy.

Mark,
I have been shooting a BRX for about 3 years now in a Rem 700, Pacnor 1-8' twist 31' barrel, .272" no turn neck, with .104" freebore. Bolt has been bushed by Gretan and .062" firing pin. Fireforming I have always used the false shoulder method using a .257" mandrel, Lapua Brass, Wolf SRM primer and 30.0 gr. Varget with the bullet jammed .030' into the lands and a moly'd 105 AMAX. This load forms very well and is accurate enough to shoot in 600 yard matches so you kill two stones with one bird. It is more sensitive to wind than normal BRX loads so you have to keep that in mind when turning the windage knob. You will hear people that only jam the bullets with great success, and some that swear by the false shoulder method. I believe in the false shoulder method, but you can pretty much take your pick.

For BRX match loads I have had good success with Rel 15 at 33.6 gr. and moly'd 105 Bergers jammed .020" into the lands. My ladder test showed the groups tightening up nicely at around 33.5-.6 gr. Anything lower was unimpressive. 33.6 grs. is about 3,025 fps in my barrel. My cases form to about 41.7 gr. of water. Case capacity, freebore, and bore diameter (mine is a .236") all figure into the pressure/velocity equation so your results may vary. Always work up slowly.

I have also had success with moly'd 107 Sierras and 33.5 gr. of Varget with CCI450's, also jammed .020" into the lands. This load also averages about 3,025 fps. Seems my rifle likes that velocity and I can achieve it easily with moly'd bullets and very good brass longevity. Have 15 firings on some brass and still has good pockets. I have been using very light neck tension using a .269" bushing and then running over a .243" mandrel. This is accurate in my rifle but there is always the fear of having to unchamber a round and leave the bullet in the barrel. Have not had this occurrence yet, but the ranges I shoot don't seem to experience cease fire orders.

Enjoy the BRX. It is extremely accurate and capable of cleans with high X-counts at 600 and 1,000 yards. The limiting factor in my case is wind reading ability and faultless execution of the shot. The low recoil makes it a joy to shoot compared to my 7mm.

Nice post Ed, thanks for the details ;) I have fireformed mine using the jammed bullet method but have tried the false shoulder with good success, I like to fire form with flat base bullets non mollied but I shoot 107 smk's with molly jammed .012 with 34.5 grains of varget with good success, I had Dave Kiff make my reamer similar to yours, it is a .269 neck with .104 free bore, I planned on turning the necks but after fireforming I measured and had between .0005 and .0009 neck clearance so I give it another go without turning and it has worked out okay we have 8 firings after the initial fireforming with no signs of pressure and tight primer pockets so far. I have a custom 6brx Newlon bushing die, a Redding 6brx die I got from RCW and a Forster 6br bushing die and ultra seater and Redding 7mm-08 body die, after using them all I think my son prefer's the Forster dies and Redding body die setup, I like the custom Newlon which also bumps the shoulder and am in the process of reaming out my Wilson 6br inline seater die with the 6brx chamber reamer and imagine it will be our process of choice. The Dashers really like H- 4895 I plan on trying some of that with 107 smk's and 105 VLD's with cci 400's, with Varget and RL-15 we have been using 205M primers, however I have tried many different primers and in fireformed loads I have not noticed a huge difference between them, and I have ran all test loads over a chronograph.

I thought part of the reasoning for BRX was so you could use your 6BR dies without buying new or mod's to the old dies? Am I wrong? Was thinking of setting my 6BR back and rechambering to BRX as an experiment.

Tom

Tom: Yes, I began loading the 6BRX using my 6BR Redding FL neck bushing FL sizer die, using a 1/10" spacer under the die lock ring & everything worked fine, problem free. Then Robert Whitley had a special run of Redding custom dies (both sizer & seater) made, and I got the sizer, the only reason being to make it a little more convenient: a dedicated sizer for each cartridge, but perfect ammo was made with the BR die. I'm still using my 6BR Forster Micrometer Benchrest Seater for the BRX, with the spacer, only to keep from having to adjust the seater that extra 1/10". What a great cartridge/ ;) It has turned out to be everything I had hoped for.

How many firings are you guys getting out of your cases? I am using 33.5 varget with 105bergers lapua brass. They are starting to click when I am opening the bolt after the 7 th firing.

Tom,
Yes you can use the 6br dies to resize the 6brx and load it and you can use any body in the .308 family the size the body, I just like experimenting so I bought the expensive custom and Redding dies because I can, I am getting a Neil Jones 6brx bushing die as well ;)

BigRiver,
I have 9 firings total 8 after the fireforming with 34.5 grains of Varget 205M and Lapua brass with out a single failure (knock on wood ) haven't even trimmed after the third firing and it doesn't look like it will for a few more firings, I see no reason not to get 25 or 30 from them. have you been sizing the body? sounds like the base of your case need's sized.
Wayne.

Bigriver: One box of 20 has 22 loadings. 33 grs. of Varget, 107 SMK seated to touch or .020" of jump, doesn't seem to matter, CCIBR4's, chronographed at 2930 fps. Primer pockets are still tight, trimmed one time, but only took off a couple of thousandths, and have not had to reduce the case head diameter. .270" chamber neck diameter. Just cannot find anything bad to say about the 6BRX. Forgot to mention: I have the Redding die adjusted to bump the shoulder back .001" or .002" with each sizing.

Thanks for the info. I have been fl sizing purchased a fl die from Robert. I will have to double check and make sure something hasn't changed.
So far I have found 2 in the last batch that had case separation.

Thanks for the input. I feel better aboout it, and will proceed with my experiment into the BRX zone.

105 Lapua and 33.6g N550. Seat .020 into the lands.

3050 with good ES,SD.

It shoots fair at 200 and High 190's at 600. Shot my first 200-9x with it a few weeks ago.

Someone explained about shoulder bumping bout a hundred years ago. I think it was neil jones, Anyway you need to bump the shoulders from the beginning as it will keep the case from stretching but that if you allowed the case to stretch there would be no way of reversing that Like you can't push the noodle back in the noodle maker. Someone else should have or get more current info from him

John,
I guess I don't understand your post, to form a 6brx you have to blow the shoulder forward .100 so bumping the shoulder to start with doesn't make sense to me. After the first firing I always bump the shoulders to keep everything uniform.
