600 yard group

Hi
What would you say was a good group size at 600 yards using a 308 rifle.
Not looking for the wold record just what size group you would be happy with as a shooter and consider a good group in your mind.

regards
Andy

1. What type of rifle and optic?
2. What is the quality and specificity of your ammunition?
3. What is you shooting setup?

Hi
I was just looking to find out what shooters would be happy with with any rifle and set up, but if you want details.

Rifle Tactical Unique Alpine TPG1 308 1/10 twist
Load SMK 190 N140 powder 42.5g COAL 2800
Scope Schmidt and Bender 12-50x56 1/8 moa

1 MOA at 600 yards is a little over 6 inches. Let that be your guide. I think most people here are looking to shoot 1/2 minute on bad days ;)

A good shooting rifle has to AGG, that being said everyone including myself shoots a really small group now and again, however rifles that can shoot 4-8 targets during a match that will consistently average 1/2 moa are really good shooting rifles to say the least by looking over the results of competition shoots all over the country 600yd-1000yd there are only a hand full and the shooters behind them have a respectfully amount to do with it.So my belief is considering all of the variables that are involved a rifle that AGG'S 3/4 MOA is a excellent shooting rig that you should cherish.

Off a folding type bipod with less than ideal rear rest like a monopod at my 650 target stand, I am -

(O-to-O)
in a real bluesy mood if over 1.2moa
satisfied under 1moa
come to see 0.75 as an A-
happy my reloading time was well spent by my trigger time 0.5
and every once in a while I get a really great grouping. 8)

If I'm using a rear bag and a good front rest I expect right at .5 or a smidgin better, but I prefer to shoot off of "field" equipment like a bipod and rear monopod.

My Sav10 fp hs has right around 3770 rounds through it. Now I'm shooting 168 Berger hybrids on top of 44grains of XBR 8208 @ 2.893 with a NXS 8-32x56 and has not shot over .3 moa at 200. I have seen some Sav10fps that split groups as they heat, but this one does not.

I know guys that are very happy with 2 moa at any range, but I don't get bent out of shape about their criteria. If I'm shooting inside 1moa in field conditions with field equipment I'll drive home happy.

With a coat and sling, iron sights, 155 gr. Sierra Palma - 1 moa over a course of 3x20 shots at 600 yds. would have me turning cartwheels. Same goes out to 1000 yds.. With a scope and rest the same rifle shoots about 3"-4" consistantly (but my bench technique is awful).

Looking over my 600 yard benchrest aggregates for the year my best .308 Win agg was 3.65", and going off memory my best group was around 2.5" that match. The gun is not actually a bench gun though, it's a palma gun with a scope and Whidden fore-end tracker plate.

I hadn't done any load development at that point, and I know there are people who can load the .308 much better than I can because of experience with the cartridge.

The two times I shot my .308 this year in benchrest worsened my year long aggregate.

I think halfmoanut is spot-on. A long range rifle that aggs .5-.75 MOA with no "mulligans" thrown out is a good rifle. My goal is always .5 MOA agg come hell or high water and that is a lot harder to achieve than it seems reading some of the stuff written here.

Andy, I am curious - do you mean what a shooter might do when holding for wind etc or do you mean what the rifle/load might be capable of i.e. vertical?

From what I have seen at the range I shoot at - FTR - 308s will clean a 1moa target at 600yards in light to moderate winds, to take out the range you would need to be .5 - .75moa for 10 shot strings on the day (plus two sighters)

A couple weeks ago I agg'ed 4.5" over two IBS 600 match's in one weekend. That was with a factory savage 308. I'm pleased with that for a factory gun. I'll shoot under 3" if I get the wind right. I was shooting 125 grain flat base bullets, so the wind could kill me.

Best I've shot that gun is 1.875" but it was probably just a fluke.

Here is a "good" group at 300 Meters. Twice will be well at 600.
But thats out of a realy accurate custom rifle.

A standard sniper rifle with good ammo can perform groups of 2" at 300 meters and 6" at 600 meters.
Out of the box most rifles (also hunting rifles) perform 4" at 300 meters and 10" at 600 meters with factory ammo and without any customizing.

A good 308 tactical rifle say a Sako TRG with good glass and the right load is capable of 5 shot 1/2" MOA group's at 600 fairly consistently in the right conditions. I'm happy with that and consider it very good.
