6 XC Trim-to dimension

Mmmm... 1.890" was the original case length spec if I recall. Wikipedia suggests this is correct, and is what I trim mine to as necessary.

The case diagram here suggest 1.898" which I suppose is fine in and of itself if your brass is that long to start with, or even longer! More important is how long is your chamber's neck portion to provide ample clearance for the loads you prepare.

Hugh Henricksen's reamer design (last iteration dated 7/03, print attached; he developed the 6XC long with D. Tubb) has the neck cut to 1.911" so if that's the reamer used to cut your chamber any of the dimensions above will be safe.

You could trim to pretty much any case OAL you choose to but keep in mind if you go short your chamber's neck will be tight should you later on go back to using cases with longer necks.

My once-fired cases seem to match the "case diagram" - 1.898 plus or minus a couple. The reamer diagram shows 1.911. "Uniforming" to something around 1.898 seems to me a prudent path - avoiding one batch of bass from being short and leaving a deposit for long cases to bump against, yet also avoiding bumping against the throat.

The comment "measure neck in chamber" ... without special tools, a stub cut with the same reamer, or making a chamber cast, how does one determine the neck length?

Thanks for the information. I now have a plan!

Yep, tricky w/o something along those lines.

Easiest way I know is to purchase a Sinclair Chamber Length Gauge of proper size, sacrifice one case to trim short enough to allow your new Length Gauge to function as intended, then get on with business.

Easy, reliable and fast - once you have one in hand.

Another fan of the Sinclair case length tool. The printed spec is fine, but knowing your specific chamber case length and cutting length to your actual spec is a much better option.
