6 XC hunting load with 87 VMax's?

Maybe too tight of a twist for that bullet????
That's what I was thinking but, the 80 grain Berger Varmints and 80 gr. Sierra "Varminters" shoot, Sub 1/2 MOA.
With the V-Maxes, one group would be tight ( 3/8 ths to less than, 1/2 inch ) then,.. 3/4" to 1 inch.
All 3 Berger's,.. 80,'s, 95's and 108's shoot, in the 2's and 3's, maybe around, 1/2 MOA on MY, "Bad Days" !
But I have had, NO consistency with, the V-Maxes ! Lesser Quality of, Bullets, coupled with, the WRONG Twist ???
Anyway, my Grandson puts them to good use, out of, my / HIS, .243 Win., 1-10 TW, Tikka,.. Plinking Steel !

Glad I’m not the only one who couldn’t get the 87 gr. Vmax to shoot in a 6XC. Spent way too much time trying. Anyway, the 85 gr. SGK does very well with Varget. Now if Sierra would only put that little plastic green tip on that bullet.

Happy Easter, John.

I know that this is an old thread but I experienced a real eye opener Friday morning. I was still trying to crack the code to my satisfaction with the 87 Vmax's but had a few primed cases left over, so I put up a 3-shot rung using AR-Comp and the Sierra 95 grain Tipped Math Kings for laughs and giggles. Since AR-Comp performs almost exactly to what QuickLoad predicts with the 87 Vmax's, I computed a charge (33.4gr) that in theory (see signature) would hit the 4th OBT node for a -20 jump using TMK's plated with HBN, that I already had made up. It was the last test before heading back home before the temps rose to unacceptable and once again, any revelation with the 87's had still eluded me.

Lo and behold, that combination with the TMK was like a laser, yielding a .18 inch, 3-shot, 100yd group including two shots in the same hole. I will now shift my attention to the TMK's for a while to see if I can both reproduce that result and hopefully tighten up the velocity SD. The two in the same hole had the identical velocity measured by my LabRadar of 3071fps. The 3rd shot was lower by 30fps. Could have been a reloading quality outlier. This was through my short throated (.050), 26", 1:8 Urban Rifleman barrel using freshly annealed 5-Fired Peterson brass and Rem 7 1/2 primers.

I realize that as sure as a blind pig finds the occasional truffle, that single 3-shot group was anything but statistically significant. However with my preceding >= 1MOA at best Vmax results earlier, that tiny group jumped out from the target. My next outing will be Monday morning before it heats up and I will report the outcome. I will finesse both the jump and charge a slight bit on either side of what I used yesterday morning.

Ever have one of those days when you can't hit a bull in the arse with a bow fiddle? Not sure why but I could not settle in and wasted my time and loads trying to reproduce that .18 CTC result. Not even close! Tightened up my attention to detail on case prep and going to have another go at it on Thursday morning, before moving on.

I have been loading the 87 gr V-Max with 38.5 grs of Reloder 17. My groups have been 3/8 to 3/4 of an inch at 100 yards. O.A.L: 2.595. My rifle has a 1 in 10" twist Douglas barrel. Cases are reformed 22-250 Remington (brand). Velocity, measured at 12 feet is 3084 f.p.s. This isn't a published load. It works well in my rifle so proceed with care.

No experience with the 6XC, but with the slightly larger 243Win and 243AI, H414 is a winner with the 87gr Vmax. 8-twist is what I used.

I never liked the 87 hornadays. Flyers were prevalent. I shoot the berger 88gr. Out of a 1 in 10 twist. 8 twist will blow them up. The 10 twist is faster also i get 3400 fps with the 88s. Keep the 8 twisters for the 105+ bullets. Match the twist for the bullets your going to shoot.
