6 SLR or 243??

FWIW,

700 rounds on my slr, used for Prs type shooting, 26" benchmark barrel, win brass, H1000, 105 hybrid, 3090fps is running easy. I will slow it down to 3000 after our match on the 6th.
stupid easy to form, I sorted case necks but can't see much of the difference. Likely the shooter or the lack of. as the others have said, this is what the 243 should have been. the reamer was off of 6mmAR site. I used the reamer for mag feeding. with the hybrids it fills up the mag for sure. I am jumping 20K and don't have much room. With easily hitting my 3000 fps target I think I could have used a reamer with a tad less Freebore and been better on the compromise between mag length and speed. At 1k rounds we will bore scope and measure throat erosion,
hoping the H1000's cool burning and the steep shoulder and longer neck are going to give me another thousand rounds.

Judd, I have some Whidden dies that I got for my 6mm Fat Rat and can't argue they are wonderful dies! I don't shoot well enough in my opinion to need the Wilson dies and truth for me I'm happy with my Hornady dies granted there are some features on the Wilson and Whidden dies that I like but 90% of the time once I get them set I'm done and will work on powder charges to tune my loads.

idahoorion, I'm pretty sure I'm going with a 26" tube as I really doubt I'm going to need a break, my last 243 was right at 13# and I could spot hits fairly easy, I'm defiantly going to try to go a touch lighter this time though but still can't see the need for a break BUT I've got some goodies to get together first. I'm going to probably go with the AI mags and try my luck with the AW double stacks as they won't hang as low so will go with a COL to fit and a reamer, I'm a big fan of the A-Max bullets and will try my best to get them to shoot well not to mention I have a bunch :)

Thanks for the advice fella's... I appreciate it greatly! Later,

Kirk,

I'm shooting hBN 105 AMax's in my Pierce actioned 6SLR in a club match that ranges from 100 to 375 yards. It is a small club match but the 105 AMax's have made me a winner at every match this season.

And those AMax's sure are nasty on groundhogs with my other 6SLR in a Savage Target Action.

Made it to the range today. The RL 26 is a velocity getter. Tested up to 46.9, .2 above book max. Accuracy needs improvement 4 shot group was just over 1/2". But it was much faster that my H4831 & H1000 loads. Both of those are in the 2920 range. 46.6 got me 3142 and 46.9 3156 with 0 pressure signs.

Good to know! what barrel length are you shooting? I really want to go with 24" but then again I really want 3K from past experience seems that's where I had my best luck with the 105-107's so thinking going 26" so I don't have to really push things. Later,

I'm running a 24". 3000 is easy with RL26. I started 2gr below max and it tested just over 3000. Seems to good to be true. I'm still waiting for the big let down.

Keep us posted on the accuracy and if you run into that let down :) I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do for an action lol Later,

Whidden makes 6SLR dies and in my opinion there is no finer die out there than the Whidden FL bushing dies. The trouble you might run into is if you want a Wilson inline seating die...now that is the unicorn in this deal. Someone was gracious enough to make me one or I was fixing to rechamber to something else. Sure am glad I didn't.

Judd,

Getting a Wilson seating die is easy peasy.......Send your reamer and Wilson die blank to a competent gunsmith and have one made......

If you don`t have the reamer, have the smith who built the rifle do it for you.

You might want to take a look at the 6mm CM, you would have no problem getting those velocities with the 107's and would be a mild load, great barrel life. just run the .243 brass through sizer, load and shoot.Im getting ready to build my dad one to shoot the 115 DTACS at a mild load of 3050 to 3100. Will do 3300fps if you want to max it out,but its cutting into barrel life

Well after a lot of soul searching and the fact I already had a mess of info and a reamer with one trip I opted to go with the straight boring 243 Win, going to split the difference and go with a 25" tube so by the time I screw on the APA break I'm still going to be what I consider pretty long on barrel. Went with a Bartlein 1-7.5 twist so should have no problem stabilizing the 115's. Hoping to have the rifle together by mid month just depends on how long it takes Jeff to get my stock back from putting the bottom metal on, the scope well I've got to stash back some more pennies... ok a BUNCH more pennies!

Folks I surly do appreciate the wealth of information and suggestions on this project! I'd buy everyone a beer or two for sure. I'll try to get some pics up when I get everything screwed together :) OH does anyone know where I can get say 100 of the DTAC bullets? I looked on Tubbs website and honestly I'd rather not purchase a 500ct. box and find out they are not what I really expected. Later,

If you still need 100 DTAC's send me a pm. I will say this at PRS matches I've seen the Hornaday 105 Match BTHP do REAL WELL in a straight .243 more then once with H1000 behind it.

I'll shoot ya a PM and we can hash out a deal of some sort.

My last 243 really loved the 107 SMK's and Retumbo powder, not a speed demon but 3050fps with that bullet made hits at range fairly easy if I read the wind right. If I recall the H1000 and Retumbo burn rates are pretty close to each other and I think I still have about 3/4 of an 8# jug left. It was nice as the barrel took a bit to get hot. I will be getting some of the Hornady BTHP's to try, I've got a handful of different bullets I'm going to try and see what I can get to work well but I hope it's not the Bergers :) Later,

Kirk

The 105 Amax's shoot well also. I have loaded for 3 different hunting rifles using them, all shot excellent. My brothers I loaded with Retumbo and at 600 yards will hammer a steel prairie dog.

If/when my .243 barrel goes south I'd like to rebarrel to 6SLR. If nothing else at least stick with .243 and go with a 1 in 8 instead of the factory 1 in 9.125. Don't get me wrong, the .243 shoots great but there's always that brass ring to reach for!

If you are getting this for mag fed rounds and shooting 105/107 class bullets look at my thread "my new SLR" or something like that. I posted some good numbers re: freebore and nag length bullets. (to lazy to look it up and I don't remeber all the measurements)
