6 Norma BR Primer Choice?

New build is in progress and I'm now deciphering on all the new "things" I need to load for it. I believe I've settled on the Wilson Micrometer Seater die, and a Harrells F/L Bushing Die. Will have a 28" barrel with a 1 in 8" twist. Will use Lapua brass. Already have plenty of Varget and some 105 A-Max's so I'll start there. Wondering which primers you folks are having success with? This is my first 6br.

My choice is
NCSRM wolf small magnum I have used them all. Some guns they don't work well.Being magnum primers the cup is thicker.so it takes a heavier firing pin spring .all my guns are on savage actions. Your choice of equipment is what i use. Good Shooting Larry

I use a crony to see which primers give least velocity spread with different primers. Often, the CCI/Wolf/Tula SRMs give the best spreads in my BRs and Dashers. One of my Dashers works better with CCI450s though.

My favorite saying guns are like women the they are all sizes and shapes to make them Happy you have to find what they like. Good Shooting Larry

I was hoping to find some "common" ground for a starting point. Looks like I got my work cut out for me.

savagedasher, I am building on a Savage model 11 action.

KD,

When I was getting into my first 6BR, the advice I got was to use CCI 450's. I did, and have no regrets.

I bought my second box of 1000 some months ago and will probably buy 5k to 10k next time around.

Primers are one of the biggest tuning tools their is .What i use or someone else does means Nothing .Use a crony and group size to find what your gun likes. Good Shooting Larry

the 6BR is relatively easy to tune - the common ground is pretty much one of the harder primers to tolerate the pressures (CCI450 is very common..I use them as well). You won't get the very best accuracy from the 105A-max but you will get very good accuracy (I shoot them).

Once you have a load (with 105 A-maxes I would expect .4moa at worst..YMMV) you can start to change components to see what effect they have and tune the load further. I tend to do this only after I have an established base line for a load, so that I don't draw incorrect conclusions.

Finally - pretty much what everyone else has said.

Did some primer testing of my own last weekend,
using a stock Savage Model 12 F Class in 6BR, 30.5 gn Varget aka AR2208 (weighed individually)
moly'd 105 gn A-Maxes 15 shot groups fired of a MagnetoSpeed chrono.

CCI BR4's avg. 2868 fps ES 21 SD 7

Federal 205's avg. 2855 ES 14 SD 5

In this case Feds get my vote.

cheers,
Chris

Good advice here from Larry. The one I have now would shoot an honest .4-.5 group in my work up loads. Then I thought I'd try Winchester small rifle primers.... and it went to an honest .2 and below group. Tried some 95's a month or so ago and found that Rem 7 1/2's were just the ticket for small groups. THEN I chrony each load to see what speed & deviation I get.

Moral of the story is.... yes be prepared to change or try different primers (and powders).

Too easy to let speed be your driving force rather than small groups. ;) WD

Wyle WD Sorry i did wrong My dasher using wolf mag primers and H4350 my standard devotion's was 2 fps 10 shots 475yds 1.985'' can you help me Larry

Good idea, started shooting a 6br about 4 years ago and got hooked. I use it for varmints, deer and some target (G-hog matches) It seemed like everyone I spoke with said 450's were the ticket and look no further. It shot good (low .3's) but like every other rifle i've tuned loads for it let me know what it likes (BR-4's.) (my next one might not)
