I shoot a Superior Action (Ross Sherman) old BR rifle in 22PPC. 24x leupold and Lee Six stock. 50 grain Vmax at 3500 and it is a fine rifle for Ghogs.

Friend shoots a Bordan Nesika 6PPc BR rifle with Nightforce BR scope and 55 grain NBT or 68 grain BR bullets. He loves it. Very accurate set up.

These rifles are made for target shooting and are adapted to field shooting from a bench. After you factor that in, the rest is simply ballistics...a velocity, a bullet style and weight and a terminal impact. Any cartridge of similar capabilities will do the same thing...but the PPC does it well and accurately, without much fuss.

Back during the p. dog wars in the 80's we used the following:

Rem 700's-6 and 22 ppc

Hall M's-6 ppc

Panda's-6 ppc(still running this one)

FDC-6 & 22 ppc

Sako A1-Custom Repeater in 22 ppc

Sako Varmint 6 PPC

We shot custom 55g HP to 65g HP made off of j4 jakets, along with the Sierra 60g HP

Accuracy and humane kills out to 450 was stellar. We avoided any bullet in the 70g weight due to severe bullet drop. We also used H335 exclusively due to speed, accuracy, and extremely long barrel life. H322 was about 200 fps slower.

with the 6ppc and a hot load of H335 with todays 55g Nosler, figure head shots on chucks to 300 a no brainer.

We made these simple but extremely effective wind flags for our field shooting

Good luck

I remember those wars... I shot out a new stainless 22-250 barrel in 9 days in the Canota Basin, and it was only one of five rifles I took - I did the same the following year too ;)

We used a similar thing, but we used is a pointer instead of a flag. We would set up on a town so we were located at approximately 6 or 12 o'clock to the wind, then we should shoot PDs that were where the string pointed to - then there was ZERO correction for wind...

I would prefer a 6BR over a 6PPC. Easier to find brass. No fire forming. Better velocity. Better beyond 300 yards. If you are going to shoot 58-70 gr bullets get a 12- or 14 twist zero freebore. I have a 0.065" freebore and 58 gr bullets are only about 1/4" into the neck.

You can buy Norma brass in 6PPC (USA) and forego the fireforming from 220 Russian for varminting. Good brass and no work with a no-turn neck. I used to really love ground squirrel hunting with my Sako Benchrest 6PPC model until our knuck-headed leaders required the switch to lead-free bullets. Can't get lead-free bullets to stabilize in a 1-14" twist barrel. Could rebarrel, but then there are so many other options for varmints. And I too would prefer the 6BR if going with 6mm. No doubt though, wicked accuracy and fair exterior ballistics.

Took Fredo out for some woodchucks today. We (think) we got 13, but the video replay has yet to be reviewed. I got 4, standing in tall grass, heads only showing, all right about 490 yards with the 22PPC, and several others closer. Fredo popped an equal number with some heavy artillery.

I shot out my Sako BR in 6PPC at prairie dogs. Used that one a lot. I also use BR guns in PPC and 6 BR for Prairie dogs and rock chucks. You can find really accurate custom guns for a fair price on BR central and such. You can't beat them actually cause when the barrel gets worn you just chamber up a new one or better yet buy used BR barrels that aren't hummers and they last for 2-3000 rounds for Prairie dogs and they're usually already chambered and threaded for 6ppc depending on your action. Buy a used BAT BR gun and you'll have a ton of used BR barrels available in 6PPC. 29.0-29.2 grs. V-133 and a 65 gr V-Max makes a seriously deadly accurate and fast, varmint load for your 6ppc. And searcher is right in that you can buy 6ppc formed brass from Norma that is just about as good as Lapua. There is a Stolle Panda BR gun on BR central right now for $1650 with a Shilen barrel, Jewell trigger and so-on. Barrel only has 800 rounds on it.

Dan,

I agree, I wish I had known of Bob White's "The List" before I built and acquired my varmint rigs. I think most would be PPC's, now that I have shot one. And rebarreling...you are right...lots of used barrels around.
