6 mm ppc for varmints

Glad you asked. I do. I do.

I have a neat little sleeved XP 100 action that I made into a rifle chambered for the 6PPC. 26 inch Light Varmint Kreiger barrel, 14 twist. I use Lapua 220 Russian brass fire-formed to 6PPC, 60 grain Berger MEF, H322,50 clicks on a Harrell measure. Don't know what the exact weight is) for 3550 fps. That little sucker will shoot tiny groups all the way out to 400 yards and the Bergers make a nice sounding PLOP when they hit. I load it as though it's a Benchrest rifle with all the same case prep, etc. No better cartridge IMHO unless you want to shoot the bigger varmints at longer range.

Just checked my notebook. 50 clicks H322 is 29.1 grains.

thanks ray for the help nice looking rifle .i intend to use the rifle for crowas fox and roe deer they are only small upto 50 pounds where i am.will give the bergers a try .would 87 grain v max shoot well or would i be better off with something lighter.

I have used the 87 V Max and it is a good bullet but you need at least a 12 or maybe even a 10 twist barrel, and a long one too. 87 grains is a heavy bullet for the PPC,if you want high velocities) and most guys stay around 70 grains or less with a 14 twist. A good compromise would be the Sierra and Berger 80 grain, both of which I have used but not in a 14 twist. The Sierra 80 grain Blitz is a really accurate bullet. I'm not sure what brands you can get where you live but the PPC seems to shoot with just about anything you want to feed it as long as you don't get in the way and try to make it more complicated than it is. I shoot long range Benchrest and I shoot a 6PPC at 600 yards. It's that good.

thanks cheechako learning something new all the time.will look at something lighter after all it will be used for hunting so i want something to shoot fairly flat.

58g Vmax, 29.3g H322 in a 22" 1-14, very effective out to 400yds, even on yotes. If you want somethng flat, go to 243AI or 22-250AI, it won't be nearly as accurate as the PPC but will be good enough for PD, they won't know the difference.

Here's a story on an EABCO model 97D in 6PPC.

You'll find some load info with 58 and 65gr V-Max, N135.

What is the make of black stock you have on your sleeved Remington? It looks like the HS Precision stock I have on my 6mm BR which I too use for chucks. I use 55 gr Blitzkings in my 12 twist PacNor barrel. What a shooter and woodchuck killer.

That black stock is a home-made job. The paint is mostly to hide what's underneath. It's an old Rem 700 wood stock from the 1970s that was beat to hell with chips missing here and there. A fiberglass repair kit, a lot of wood strips glued on here and there, a lot of disc sanding, a coat of the non-skid spray paint, and there you have it. Someday in the far future a shooter will get that stock and decide to re-finish it. When he strips off that black paint . . .:eek:

I have shot untold thousands of p. dogs with a Panda 6PPC with PMC 7.62x39 brass with the large rifle primer. I shot h-335,
WC-844, or 2230-S with the 6mm- 40,45,50,55, and 60g bullets that I made on the short .750 jacket with .070-.090 Meplat. The accuracy of the light bullets with 335 is simply unreal. The barrel would still shoot in the high 3's at 10,000 rounds but had become a bitch to clean. My barrel was a Hart 24"-14 twist unturned blank. I could not touch the rifling with my 8s ojive bullets on the short jacket after 2500 rounds down the tube. In spite of having a long leade, the gun would still shoot occasional 1" groups at 300 yards in the field. I would think that the N-130 and perhaps AA2230 would be exceptional with the light bullets.

Good luck!

I too use a 6ppc for varmints. Mine is a ruger m77mkII vt 26inch 12 twist, from factory). I mainly use berger 69gr low drags molly coated and driven by 30.1 grain of h335. I have a 500 yard kill with this rifle and load. With this load it will consistantly shoot 1/2 to 3/4 inch groups at 200 yards .
