6-digit SN 700

I'm wondering if any of our military types or history buffs may know... I've got an older 6 digit SN 700 (321xxx) that was factory drilled and tapped for a aperture sight(two screws on the left side of the rear receiver bridge), and has the firing pin that protrudes roughly 1/2" beyond the bolt shroud. If I Inderstand correctly, this is the correct model for the original M40. If so, is it more valuable than a regular Remington action? It was tried by S&S Precision, would that make it "not original"?

your post made me curious, so I checked and sure enough my oldest 700 with a 5 digit sn has the two screw holes. they are filled with the older slotted screw. my 40x's have the same two holes... more valuable?? not to me, but maybe somebody

I had one in the right sn range. Tried to get an extra hundred over what any other 700 action is worth and never got any bites. I ended up building and shooting it.

Remington lists a 210xxx as a 308W sniper-1963 model The other sniper listed had a 314xxx and was a 308W-1964 model. All of the earlier? models were drilled and tapped on the LH side for iron adjustable aperture sights. How is the LH side of the barrel marked?
Also, I don't know what tried means.

Sorry, Apple products and my fingers don't get along, the action was trued, not tried. The barrel is now a Benchmark in 243 win, it started life as a 243 varminter.

I believe most C Prefix and earlier 700's where still taped on the side for the Redfield iron sight base. Back when NRA highpower was still a reported and supported sport by the NRA and in the Rifleman magazine. sigh....

I check some of my other older 700's , some with the "c" prefix and no holes on the side
I dug out a few of my older M700's and checked. The newest that I have with the holes is a B622xxxx 7mmRM however I have a 223 rem. Var. B654xxxx that does not have the holes. As a side issue but related: Which have the stripper clip slot? My oldest with the slot is a 222RM SN 102xxx however a 280 Rem. SN 222xxx does not have the slot. Mt 40X SN 431xxx has the holes but no slot. Just for another side note, my 6oo Mohawk has holes in the side.

I believe you have a good 700, but with aftermarket barrel, surely not a collector. I'm pretty sure it was just a run of the mill 700.

The 321xxx is not clip slotted, I'm not sure if there is a cutoff number or if it was sporadic to an extent.

Butch, I was just curious if people would be more inclined to want it to create a replica M40. Once the barrel is shot out, I'd be more than happy to do an even swap for a trued 700 action if someone wanted it to build one themselves a replica.

James, I don't understand why you would think it would be more desirable than another 700.
Good luck with whatever you do with it.

721/722/700 action rear bridges are/were not "Stripper Clip Slotted".
Only 40X Repeater action rear bridges are stripper clip slotted.

Some, not all "C" prefix serial numbered receivers were drilled & tapped for receiver sights.

All "D" prefix to current production bolt bodies are not cut for bolt lock safeties.

Dan I beg to differ, I recently sold a 1967 Remington 700 stainless sporter that was slotted.

Ok , when someone says stainless today it usually means, well you know .
Yes stainless barrel , blackened. Remington discontinued the drilled holes APRX 66 and the clip slots were a hold over from the 721 I think and shortly discontinued on the 700 . At least that's all I can remember .
