6 Dasher Update. 100 and 600 Yard pics.

I had an issue a couple of weeks ago where my twice fired brass started popping 205M primers. It cost me a new Jewell trigger; the pierced primers broke the sear. There never was a problem with the 205's during fire forming, load development or my first 600 yard match. But while practicing a few weeks ago, they suddenly started popping. It turns out that I was oversizing my brass by a few thousandths....too much headspace.

My load has always been 32.5 Varget, 105 Hybrids sitting .010 off the lands, 205M primers, with a velocity right at 2993 and a measly 3 to 10 FPS Extreme Spread. When the new trigger came, I went back to the range with 450 primers and shot the same load over the chrono at 100 yards. Also, I adjusted my F/L Redding bushing die to only push the shouler back .0015.

The new primers dropped my velocity by 50 FPS and the groups opened up a little bit. Hmmmm? I ran the bullets in to + .010 and jacked the Varget up by a tenth to 32.6. Velocity went right back up to 3000 with ES in the single digits, according to my new Oehler 35P.

I got to the range later than I wanted that morning and didn't have a lot of time for the new load development, because I wanted to practice at 600. A few groups with the new primer, less shouldr bump, jack the powder by a tenth.....see how they do at 100. Presto....done.

Here is how the new load did at 100. It's only a three shot group. Like I said, I was sort of in a hurry. Well, rats. For some reason, the picture of the 100 yard group won't show up here. Anyway, it measured .085. Good enough...time to move to 600 yards.

I shot five, 5 shot groups. My intent was to shoot them as fast as I could accurately, with my Remington 700. Guessing that my average 5 shot time was about 40 seconds. We have a remote camera at 600 yards that you control with your laptop. I had it sitting on a stool where I could look down at the screen but didn't look at it during my shot string. Only after I was done shooting a group. You will see that I most always had one shot that went high or low; I don't know which shots those were. Barrel getting hot, stock upsetting in the bags, not getting quite back to the point of aim before I fired, wind? I have no clue. At any rate, this is as good as I have done with 5 five shot groups at 600 yards. No complaints on my part but I want to do better. I am sure I will.

Steve,

You suck. You should quit!!!

;D

Horrible... That Dasher round is pretty darn cool.

Bradley?

i can't get a break. I'm doing the best I can. I promise I will try to do better.

Thanks for the positive support. i know you meant it that way. You try hard too.

PS. I got to the range and set up at 600 that morning by 7:30. One of the problems was that my target was still in the shade. No mirage to gauge wind direction and/or speed. Hourly forecast said 7 to 10 MPH from the N/NE. The range faces due north. I waited around until about 8:15, when the sun was finally shining on my target. But still too early for any heat waves or mirage. By the second group, I could barely see a hint of mirage.

Like I said....I am doing the best I can with this decrepit equipment. :o

Are you serious that is sick!!!

Bradley,

I have been following your numerous threads here on trying to get your rifles shooting the best they can. I'm hoping that you knew that I was teasing about doing the best I could with my poor equipment. I think you do. But the point is, my equipment is quite a bit down the scale from the benchrest actions I shoot against in the matches. This long action 700 can't hardly compete against the dual port rigs and guys who can blast off 5 shots in around 10 or 15 seconds. Not when those guys are some of the best shooters in the country, regardless of what they are shooting. They are tough!

RonB was a few benches down from me at our March 10 600 yard match. Hell of a nice guy; friendly, open and quite willing to talk about his equipment and all, even though it was the first time I ever met him. Of course, Mike Eschelman was shooting there too. That guy is like impossible to compete with. I have shot against him a few times. He aways takes home a truckload of plastic wood.

I am loosing my train of thought here some. Anyway, I trust your comments were supportive and surely do wish you the very best. One of these days; if I catch the wind conditions just right, I am pretty sure I will manage an honest 5 shot group in the 1 1/2 inch range. Of course, that will only come in the practice sessions.....come match day the winds will be howling and I will be back to tossing a 7 incher a few times.

I finished a little above the bottom of the top half in Light Gun and I think about the same in Heavy Gun. (60 shooters in Light Gun, I think I was about 25) My goal is to finish in the lower, upper third. Ain't no way I can get to the top against these birds. Their equipment and skills are too far above mine. Like our buddy Clint said...A man has got to know his limitations.

You take care buddy and my best wishes for your efforts. I'm hanging in there too and doing my best, with what I have to work with.

Don't be so sure... I think you will find that a lot of records have been set with good ol Remmy 700's...

I have a 40x and I bought it because the current world record at the time was held by a 40x.

Well, you are honest. Quite refreshing actually!!! Most Interent shooters shoot "1/4" all day long"!!!
