6 BR to 30 BR

Tried to expand the case from 6 BR to 30 BR and having trouble keeping the neck straight.
Checked the TIR on new Lapua brass at .0015 -.002, use a K&M expander and the TIR checked .005 - .006.
I've lubed inside the neck as well as the expander, made two strokes.
I've lengthen the handle on the press for more leverage for a slower more controlled stroke.
I've stroked part way, backed up, rotated the case and finished the stroke and then made one more.
What should I be doing different?? of just forget it and buy my brass from Ron H.??
Input would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Shoot your regular load with that brass 2x......then take it to a match. If your chambers straight, the brass will be straight. In other words it needs to be fireformed.

Ron has a very nice system setup and his brass is very consistant piece to piece and done on a lathe. I have bought brass from Ron and it is good to go! Another place to look is P1Zombie killer right here on this site. His brass is also very consistant and I have talked with him on the phone. He is very conscientious and I now have a set of his 30BR brass. I have yet to use it, but it measures within 1 or 2 ten thousandths and will shoot just fine! I had the same concerns that you have, and there are several ways to approach that issue.
1. Expand your brass and then turn it to the correct neck thickness, load and fire it and if your chamber is concentic, your brass will be straight when you're done.
2. Load and fire it in your chamber as a 6BR using one of the fast powder/filler combinations then run the expander through it and turn to the proper thickness.
3. Some have loaded the 6BR brass with 6mm bullets and fired them then treat as #2. I would only do this in a dedicated fireform barrel that you really don't care about.
Any questions, feel free to PM me.

One of the men who has done a ton of work on the 30BR is Al Nyhus. Right here on accurate shooter in the artical on forming the 30BR case he states in that artical. And I quote

"Don’t be concerned about how straight the necks are before firing them the first time. When you whap them with around 50,000 psi, they will straighten out just fine!"

When I formed my initial case work for my 30BR I took this advice to heart. My necks straightened out just fine. Good Luck!

Gentlemen - thanks for the feedback!
This is my first go with a custom of any kind so I'm double checking everything.
I guess I just got ahead of myself. ???

Thanks again.

If you'd like to straighten the necks before neck turning...just run them through your f.l. die with a .335 or .334 bushing installed. Depending on the die you're using and/or how you've got it set up (for sizing the length of the neck), you may have to space the bushing up so it doesn't bottom out on the 'lump' at the new neck/shoulder junction of your expanded brass. A small 'o' ring does the trick if your die sizes all the way to the bottom of the neck.

Hope this helps. -Al
