6 BR COAL

I'm new to reloading for the 6 BR so I'm looking for a little guidance regarding COAL. Does the 6 BR like a little jump to the lands or is it more accurate if it's touching them? I have an 8 twist barrel specifically chambered for Lapua brass and I will be using 100 and 107 grain bullets.

Tok,

I like mine to just touch, or jammed about 10 thou. I haven't tried the heavy bullets, my heaviest has been the 80 grain Berger FB and it shoots lights out at touch. It also shoots jammed and jumped, I just like the idea of loading long, with light neck tension (about a thou) and letting any difference in OAL be taken care of when I close the bolt!

Welcome to the forum. Lotsa good people and info here!

Not unanimous, all of the ballot boxes haven't been collected. The 6br collective in GA is shooting 105 Hybrids at 8-10 thousandths jump. Not that it matters, but these are High Master prone shooters looking for every X at 600-1000 yards.

That's very interesting.

You should also consider how you plan on unloading your gun when you have closed the bolt with the bullet into the lands and the Range Master calls cease fire and remove all bolts. After you open the action and powder is strewn through it with your now stuck bullet into the rifling, been there and done that. Gun is out of commission to finish relay and you feel like an ass for soft seating your bullets, never again at a match....

Ron,

You're absolutely right. I've seen it happen to a shooter with a new 30BR from Rimrock. I don't know what his neck tension was, but he was dumping powder into his Jewell trigger and the gun wouldn't fire!

I haven't had that problem (knock wood) and I actually use a long-loaded cartridge to find "touch" and go from there. On my .270 neck 6BR, with no-turn Lapua blue box brass, I can load/unload when I use the .267 bushing. That doesn't mean that any other chamber/barrel combo would be as "lucky" and I hope to stay lucky with my new barrel!

I shoot Berger 105VLDs and was jumping them .002". Shot some really scores at 600 (596-597) with over 50% x-count. I read the Berger Bullets VLD on their web site and tried jamming them .010 into lands, .040 off, .080 off, and .120 off. Now my rifle will shoot 5 rounds in 1" square at 300 yds jumping .120 off lands. Can't wait until Saturday to try this set up in our monthly match. Experiment and you might be surprised. Good Shooting,
