6 BR primer test

The cost of CCI BR4 primers is outrageous. I decided to test BR4primers versus CCI 400 primers.
I loaded 5 rounds with 3 different powder charges with 95 Gr SMK bullets and 400
and BR4 primers. The results were that the 400s and BR4s had the same point of impact.
The BR4's were only slightly more accurate. Would the BR4 cost be worth the higher cost?
local prices are $0.16 each for the BR4 and $0.10 for the 400. I think I will take the savings
and my next purchase will be 400's.

For $.04 per primer I’ll take slight accuracy every time not to mention the kind of pressures I’m running I’m not going to chance piercing a prime!… I have pierced 400’s in Dashers and Brx’s back in the day. The 400’s were designed for lower pressure .223,22 Hornet and 30 carbine and other similar rounds

I use Remington 7 1/2's interchangeably with BR-4's. I see zero difference in accuracy. I've not seen any difference in reliability either except that in 6mm Creedmoor SRP brass I had minor hang fire issues with some less than ideal powders I tried during the powder shortage. With the proper powder 7 1/2's and BR-4's work equally well along with 450's.

I ran essentially the same test with a Dasher and 105 Hybrids. The BR4 was faster than the 450. Fed match even slower. Only about 20 FPS from BR4 to Federal

At what distance are these primers being tested ?

I've never seen a primer that won't shoot. So long as they ignite, that is. Can't really say that I've ever had a bad primer either. In the instances where I have had a FTF, it was always traceable to something else...I think. Some handle pressure better than others and changing primers may affect tune, but in those cases, a little change to the load or a nudge of the tuner and they've all shot very well...likely within all other variables. I have seen different POI with a primer change but again, a little re-tuning and all is well again, if necessary. There have been times that I simply couldn't see any change at all, too...with all going into the same little hole fired round robin. Just one of the many things you really have to test in your load and setup to know how the change affects it. I don't think it's as simple as saying that x and y primers interchange better either. Every component can matter to the pressure curve. I'm talking BR here, not hunting rifles etc.

Yes. From same brick. Sorted out the extremes on purpose.
Twice fired, annealed, weight sorted brass.
Berger 85.5, sorted for length and weight.
Powder, SB 6.5 weighed on A&D EJ-54D2, 31.70grains.
28" 22N AR-15, prone from a bipod and bag.
I know 5 shots per group is NOT statistically significant.

Vertical on odd number shots is not my normal. Got lucky I guess :)

Was everything light vs heavy in the test or just the primers. IOW, brass and bullets all same weight but primers the only thing light vs hvy?
