6 BR magazine feed issues

Thinking of chambering a rifle that uses AI magazine for 6BRX and wondered if anybody has had any experience with that combination. I have put a mocked up round in the rifle (.308) to see how it works and it seems to pick the round up OK but I was just wanting to hear some " been there, done that" words from the wise. Thanks.

Just got back from the range with my AI mag equipped 6br. I put a 0.25" spacer in the front of the mag. I did have to adjust the feed lips on the magazine (a .308 version) to allow the shells to sit higher, but since then feeding is perfect.

I had done a Bryant-mod internal mag before this and could never get it to run well enough.

How does the spacer fit and work? Is it a permanent deal or can it be removed. What is the purpose of the spacer? Thanks for the info.

The spacer is a .25" thick piece of aluminum stock trimmed to fit the width of the mag. I epoxied it into place with some JB Weld. I did also have to shorten the follower, but a hack saw and some sanding made quick work of that.

Since the unmodified magazine is significantly longer than the 6br cases, the spacer helps hold the rounds in position. Under recoil and when cycling the bolt the rounds in the mag move. Without the spacer, given the short body of the 6br case, the cases would likely get out of whack under recoil.

I do know some people have successfully run dashers in unmodified magazines, but the increased body length of those rounds I'm sure help keep everything in place.

Like 2Dogs notes, I've heard of a number of people modifying the 223 AI magazine for 6brs. The 223 mags are less expensive. I think you basically just have to open up the feed lips on them (sanding them open as the mags are plastic). You also get 7 6br cases into the modified 223 mags.
