6.8 BR??

A while back I couldn't find much about the 6.8 SPC on a bolt gun platform so I built one on a Savage action. It turned out to be a real shooter.

While I was building the 6.8 SPC I was thinking why not a 6.8 BR?? Lots of info about the 17, 20, 22, 6mm, 6.5, 30 and 7mm BR but nothing about a 6.8 BR. ???
Necked up some Lapua 6BR brass to 6.8 (.270), stuffed a 90 grain bullet in it to the shoulder neck junction and sent it off to PT&G and had them cut me a reamer to the dummy round. Was told that it was a "first" in that caliber.
Picked up a 11 twist Wilson .270 barrel on Gunbroker, sent it and the reamer to "Preacher" and had him chamber it for me. Got the barrel back today and couldn't wait so I pulled my 6BR barrel and installed the 6.8 BR.
Headed to the range with some ammo that I had pre loaded ahead of time. Figured a 3 shot group would tell me if I was getting close or not.
Took a few rounds to get it back on paper after it was torn apart a few times but I think I found a load it likes. (Holy Bugholes Batman I think I found a load it likes.) ;D
The "hot ticket" now is the 30 BR so why not try a 6.8 BR? Not much in the way of recoil. It does have a crack to it but it rides the bags good. Comparable to a 100 grain 6BR.
A little ammo tuning and I think it'll be a keeper. ;)
It will get changed to the same style right hand stock cut for a left hand repeater action with a single shot sled. Its a Savage so it can be changed to anything you want. ;)
No Chrony specs yet but it's shooting bug holes.
Not too bad for an "old dude"! Mikie "really" likes it. ;D

Great pics, ya like that aa2460 powder. i have burned a ton of it in the 22ppc. and in the 6br. love the .277 cal. just no super bullets for it.
one of my favorite rifles is a kimber 8400 in .270 win
and its a shooter, have it set up for 1,000yd shooting with a ior 9-36 tac scope on it.(looks like a vintage sniper rifle with a night scope on it). loaded with a 150vld at 3,050FPS it works well out to 1,000yds.

I started using Accurate Arms powders "years" ago. I went through about 50 pounds of the AA2230C Data powder in my gas guns till you couldn't get it anymore. It worked so well that I started using it in my .221 Fireball as well as my 22 and 6 BR. Worked good in the 6.8 SPC so I loaded it for the 6.8 BR. The burn rates were real close so I went back to the AA2230 and AA2460.
Guys will jump from one powder to the next without really working to see what they can ring out of a specific powder. By jumping around you may never know the full potential of one powder.
Kinda like swapping bullets and powder charges at the same time. All you do in end up chasing your tail. Slow and steady will get better results. ;)

Paraphrasing what has already been said:

"Boolets, man, boolets. Need stinkin' great boolets".

Same issue as a 6.5 Grendel or 6.5 BR for 100-200 benchrest.

Barrel life should be good? I say enjoy! I love the experimenting part of this sport more than I like anything else! Cool new toy!! ;)
