6-6.5x47 confusion

Okay this entire 6-6.5x47 lapua thing has me confused. Seems like its half dozen one or the other to me.

Considering a 600-1000 yard rifle.

Reformed 6.5x47 laupa to 6mm.....

Its got more case volume than a 6br, 6ppc, 6x47 swiss etc etc, but less than a 243 or a 243AI. It does have better shoulder angles than a 243 and you still have to neck size it. Although an efficient case the 6x47 lapua has a large primer pocket so that advantage is gone.

So question #1 is why would you choose a 6-6.5x47 lapua over a 243/243AI or even just a 243 with slighly improved shoulder angles. I think someone here is working on something similar for a 2000-3000 round barrel life.

I did read that lapua was coming out with factory 6x47 lapua brass so that might be enough to sway me, since there would be no forming.

Or should I just shoot good 243 Lapua brass, slow powder and somewhat reasonable loads, like 2900 with DTAC 115's. Besides there is a ton of 243 factory ammo around for hunting etc.

.....

The 6.5x47 lapua makes more sense as a 6.5 round, considering the alternatives, like the 6.5x55 swiss takes a lot more powder to reach the same velocities, 6.5 grendel is a bit slow etc.

The 6.5mm x 47 has a small primer pocket....so you do have that advantage...
The 6mm- 6.5mm x 47 does have less case capacity than the 243, but will get damn near same velocities with less powder and alot longer barrel life. Plus, it is easier to keep it "tuned". The faster you push something the more finicky it gets.
For example, an economy car runs dang near for ever, while a race car takes a whole crew to keep running....
The 6mm version is an better choice in my opinionbecause the 6.5 version can't push a 142gr bullet fast enough to compete with a 6.5 x 284 at 1000.

I just read that the 6.5x47 Lapua had large primer pockets somewhere here.

Hmm. I will have to see if I can find that.

Guess that was a prototype as the diagrams show small primers.

Thanks

Thanks,

I am just getting ready to change gears.

I have a heavy bullet 223 for ftr, and I had anticipated starting out long distance with a 25-06 and switching barrels later.

Basically a great tried and true hunting round but is not that competitive. I have now flip flopped and want the best competitive cartridge with good barrel life to start, and hunting with that caliber will come second.

6mm seems to be the most competitive, until you get to the 6.5-284, 7mm WSM, 300 WSM etc.

Way back in November 2005, when Lapua gave us the first reports on the case, Lapua was going to make it with a large primer pocket. We did report that. Then, in part because of our request, they continued testing, initially with big pockets sleeved to small. Darrell Jones even managed to get some of those transitional sleeved cases.

At Shot Show in 2006 when Lapua released the cartridge publicly, the final design was with small flash hole and small primer pocket. I believe all the cases sold commercially in this country have that configuration.

All reports are that, with this small primer pocket, the cases hold pressure very well, and like the 6BR case, they perform very well at relatively high pressures. I was just talking to a guy last week who is getting 3085 fps using H4350 with 123 grain, 6.5mm Scenars. He says the groups are tight little cloverleafs, with ES around 10 fps. He feels he can push them even faster with RL15, but he is so happy with H4350, he sees no need to change.

RL15 is a little fast for the 6mm version,6-6.5x47), so H4350 and Norma URP would be our first recommendations. We'll know more soon as we're building a test rifle with two barrels, one a 6mm and one a 6.5mm.

The brass is available at any of the Lapua vendors as 6.5x47 simply run it in a 6x47 full lenght die or neck sizer with the proper bushing to neck it down to 6mm.

My gunsmith showed me this same cartridge years ago that was formed from 22-250 brass and he called it the 243 tweener as it is between the 6 br and the 243.He chambered several benchrest rifles in it and shot it himself in the 1970's.There were no dies available commercially and like all wildcats you had to make them.I liked the idea but didn't want the hassle of forming cases and getting costum dies. There were others doing this also but called it something else. This 6x47 Lapua is a spitting image of the wildcat he showed me except the small primer pocket, and much easier to get shooting with the brass and dies that are associated with it today.

I've been shooting my 6x47L for two weeks come Monday.
After shooting the 6br for three years this is the new real deal.
I'm using H-4350 and 107MKs. With 40.3gr it was shooting 3110.
I didn't check the SD and all that. I go and shoot some 200 and 300 paper then 600 steel. If it shoot good I'm not caught up in the numbers that much.
It's shooting in the .5" @ 200yrds. That's good enough for what I'll do with it.

Going from the BR to this has realy helped out my long range 1st round hit. After 600 w/ the br and 15mph wind it wasn't easy. Now I have a much flater shooting setup. Also it will mag feed.

I'm now up to 41.5gr of 4350 with the 107. I haven't put it over the chrony again but it should be right up there.
This might be hot in some guns. I've always had the Broughton's shoot a hotter load then most.

This barrel loves the 80gr Bergers and V-540. Broughton true 1/8 at 28". But I'd call this a 300yrd load. The 107s just eat the wind better.

Very managable recoil.

This Lapua case in the next sliced bread.

95gr Bibs on the way!!
