Thought I would chime in here. I am along time 6.5 Swede lover, built my first one over 30 years ago myself, on a unissued Husky. I still have it. I cut the barrel back to 24", turned it down to a sporter profile, drilled and tapped it, crowned the barrel, bent the bolt, parkerized it and bedded in a synthetic stock. Added a Timney Featherweight trigger that breaks under #2 and a Burris USA made 4x12x40. I have accounted for over 40 deer, 600 woodchucks, and about 100 coyotes here in KY an Tenn.. I have since built over 100 swedes, mostly on Mauser actions, 96 and 98, but about 20 of them were on Rem 700 and Savage 110's. When I started doing load development, I worked with 20 powders, 4 different primers, and 4 different brand of bullets, and did it over 2 years. One powder that I found out early on was a barn burner, was IMR-3031, not listed as a great powder for the swede. I had 3 kegs of it, and started honing in on the load. With 120sp Sierras, at 3100fps, it would shoot in the .300's at 100yds, and less with 140 bthp Sierras or Hornadys. I shot a group once in a sniper/hunter match, 3 shot groups at 100, 200 and 300, with a requirements that your gun must weigh under 11 pounds scoped and loaded, 12x was the most power you could use for scopes. I shot a .380 at 100yds, a .277 at 200 yds, and .820 at 300 yds. This was an informal match and I won it, back in 1987 or 88. This was with a way hotter than book load, but it shot great with no pressure signs, out of the 7.5 twist Military barrel. About 4 years ago, we did a Kwik Load, I think it is called workup on a buddies computer program, and the loads came out as 95% efficient or better. I am building 2 new 6.5 Swedes as I type this, both on Savage actions. I have 3 6.5x284's, and they are shooters, both on Savage long actions. The last deer I shot with my 6.5 Swede, was 510 yds, shot with Leica rangefinder, in a filed I chuck hunt and yote hunt all year, have for 35 years, and know the drop on the 120gr load like the back of my hand. I was recovering from hip surgery, 3 weeks before the season, and was parked in my truck, with the side mirror pulled over and 2 bags, a sandbag and a Bulls bag on top of that. I had been pretty sick, and said a prayer asking for a shot at a deer. About 5 minutes late a 5point walks out into the field, and starts licking a low hanging limb on a huge beech tree I had just shot the range on, at 510. He was angling away, I put the crosshairs about 4 inches over his back, above the last rib, and at the shot he mule kicked, and dove over the hill. I called the wife, she came over and put a rope around him, drug him out with a 4 wheeler. It had hit behind the last rib on the left, took out the vitals, and blew the right front leg off at the knee, he only went 15 yds, mostly over a hill. Just my 2 cents worth and experience with the swede.
