6.5x47Lapua and Berger Bullets

I've been shooting 123 gr. Sierra HPBT in my rifle and recently I wanted to try some 130 gr. Berger bullets. This rifle is chambered in such a way that I have no problem in OAL of the Sierra bullets fitting into the case such that the upper end of the beginning of the boat-tail is even with the bottom of the neck but not so with the Bergers which are longer. With the Bergers just touching the lands I have to have the bullet seated (COAL) such that the upper end of the boat-tail is extending down past the neck a bit and in testing or comparing the Bergers against the Sierra 123 grainers....the Bergers are lousy shooters with the current configuration requirement of having to be deep seated! I don't want to run a 'throater' into this chamber so I guess I'll have to stick with the Sierras which shoot exceptionally well out of this Jon Beanland built rifle. I've never had any rifles that shot well using BT bullets whereby the base of the bullet had to be deeply seated to a degree whereby the bolt would close!

Jon built my 6.5x47 as well. Somewhere within a few tenths of a grain above or below 37.5gr Varget with CCI 450 primers and the bullets jammed square into the lands gives me fantastic accuracy with 130gr Bergers. Yes the bullet boat tail is seated well into the case.

More than likely somewhere between 37.2 to 37.8 will be a node. Speed will really depend upon your barrel, they're all different. I'd recommend starting around 37gr in .2gr increments.

USMC1986 is on the money with two 6.5x47L's I have. The center of the node for the 8 twist barrel is 37.5 gr. of Varget. The center of the node for the 9 twist barrel is 37.3 gr. both with the 130 gr. Berger jamed .010 . My freebore may be a little longer than yours as I ordered my Kiff reamer for this bullet.
Hope this helps.

RobinHood,
Which Kiff reamer did you use? I just ordered #9818 with .125 freebore to shoot 120-130 grain bullets for my 6.5x47L. Thanks!!

Not sure of the order #. The number on the print that came with it is #18052. It is for a no turn neck with Lapua brass. freebore = .112 .

After 5 days spent conducting 'ladder test'....I settled on a load of 38.3 grs. Varget, BR4 primer, Lapua brass. This was fired from 1000 yds. The bright spot has 4 rounds in one 'splatter'. The other shot is just slightly lower by 1.5" and slightly left! I thought the wind had slacked up a tat so I held left a little and the round hit where I held!

Great shooting RMulhern! Good info in this thread! About one more month I should be bringing my new 6.5X47 home.

I shoot 140 bergers in mine

It's throated for 130s but it like the 140s better. And yes, it eats up the case capacity some, but it's very accurate. But you've got to try RL 17 with the 6.5 X 47 Lapua. It's THE powder for this round. I shoot a compressed load at 40.4 grains of RL 17. I love this powder, I had so much success with my bench gun I tried it on my 308 FNAR and 270 hunting rifle. And it's my favorite powder in those guns as well.
