6.5x47L Imp.

Hi gentlemen,

Im new to the board and am scouring for some information on the 6.5x47 Imp.

Velocities, loading data, prefered powder/bullet?

How much case capacity will I have over the Std. 6.5x47?

Anyone currently running one in a BR or tactical rig?

Any information/links would be appreciated.

I'm shooting a 6.5x47 Ackley Improved in 1000 yard benchrest. I just measured case capacity, the standard cartridge held 43.7g water, the improved version held 48.4g. You don't get a big increase, but I think the 40 degree shoulder leads to better accuracy due to increased powder combustion in the case. I have a 31" Broughton barrel with a BAT MB action, shooting 38.4g of Reloder 15, CCI 450 primers, 130 JLK moly coated bullets, .090 freebore. It runs 2940 fps, I've shot under 4'' 5-shot groups at a 1000yd. The moly and the barrel and the improved case allow me to run this load, you should start closer to 37g to be safe, lower if you use a heavier bullet. Get your freebore right for the bullet you choose, .120 freebore would be better for Berger 130's.

Thanks for the words Jerry.

My smith reccomended .090" freebore with 130 VLD's so thats what I'm going to have. Between 130 and 140 VLD's fed from a mag, I was trying to have the ability to jam into the lands...I think it will work out.

I dont expect the same velocities as your getting, as I plan to run uncoated bullets/bore in a 25" Lawton 3-groove/Badger M2008 action. Is this your first barrel with the 6.5x47 AI?

Good to hear about outstanding accuracy w/ RL-15, I was hoping that would be one of the select powders. This is my first wild-cat cartridge, so I wanted to see how you went about fire-forming. I dont really want to neck up and then create a false shoulder if I dont have to, could I get away with jamming a bullet deep in the lands under a healthy charge of powder and expect minimal run-out on fire-formed brass?

Yes, this was my only barrel. As far as fireforming, jamming should work for you as well as others. You are not blowing the shoulder very far. Runout shouldn't be a problem. I full-length resize with each firing, setting the shoulder back .001. I fireformed mine with the cream of wheat method, which required an additional loaded-round firing to get final shape. However, if you don't size-up then reduce to a tight-fit, you will get some wheat kernels in the chamber, leaving small dents in the brass. They will come out next firing. Next time I will size up to .270 and then down for a tight fit. A true Ackley chambering is shorter by .004-.006 which gives you a tight fit with standard brass.

This is too interesting to pass up.

I've been shooting the 6.5X47 for two years with the loads stated on the forum. All of which have worked.
Right now its H4350 with the Berger 130 vld, 41.5 grains.
The Lapua 123 gr with 38.5 of varget and did very well at Butner at 1000 yds. Also he Berger.
Tomorrow will be the Laupua 139 mollied with 40 grains of 4350.

If you want more, go to the 6.5X55 Swede which I shot for 5 years at 1000. VV560, 48 grains, Lapua 139.

If you want more go to a 6.5X284 proven by the top shooters in the US. VV560/ 51 grains, Laupua 139, jest about 3000 plus.

Why push something out of something that is proven. Unless your a tinkerer.
Work on the tool that has the biggest variable.
The shooter.

Ben-Why Ackley the 6.5x47? You got me figured with the tinkerer label, but there are other reasons. First, I think the standard cartridge is a little small for 1000 yards. Yes, the bullet will get there, but if it gets there a little faster, you have less wind drift. Second, I think the 40 degree shoulder is more efficient, it promotes more of the combustion in the case as opposed to the barrel, so accuracy is higher with reduced turbulence on exiting the muzzle. Third, using the smallest possible case to send a high B.C. bullet that far results in less recoil, which aids shooter accuracy. Look how well the Dasher guys are doing at 600 yards. The other cartridges you mentioned are fine, but less of a challenge and have drawbcks. In the Seventies I use to race motorcycles in the desert. The 400cc bikes were faster but less efficient. I raced a 250cc (Husqvarna) because I always had to go wide-open to do well, while the open class bike riders were backing off to keep from getting over their heads. Personally, I did better. With the 6.5x47 A.I. at 1000yds, I have to try harder, pay more attention to my reloading, do more case prep, do more of everything to try to beat the bigger cartridges. I understand this doesn't appeal to everyone, but works for me. Besides, the sucker just looks good.
