6.5x47 with 130 VLD and H4350

Hello, I have a 6.5x47 built on a Savage target action with a Krieger barrel thats 28 inches. I was just curious as to what loads you are using with good results with the 130 class bullets and H4350?

Thank you.

Jerid

I have had good luck with 40.8 of H4350 and the Berger hunting or target 130 VLD. Running a CCI 450 primer, I am getting right around 2900. This is out of a 26" Krieger barrel. The furthest I have shot to date is 600 yards and it has held 1/2 MOA or better for me.

I'm running 40.3 to 40.6g H4350, 130vld target, lapua brass, cci 450 primers, @ 2880fps in my F-open gun.
remington action, 27inch broughton barrel.

Two different guns, 41.5gr of H4350, Wolf SRM, bullets seated 0.015" into the lands. One with a 22" Rock Creek barrel built on a Stiller action, one with a 30" Brux barrel on a Savage. They both shoot great with the same loads, despite one having a longer throat. ~100fps velocity difference.

Thanks for the info. Im using 40.5gr now with 130gr JLK's. I think ill go ahead and try 41 and 41.5gr and see what happens. So far the 40.5 has shot really good but, seems a little on the slow side at 2840fps Id really like to get closer to 2900.

I am running 39.5 grs 4350, 0.010 into the lands, CCI450 or wolf primers. Bartlein barrel 26 inchs, 8.0 twist. Clocked with a Oehler 35P @2650fps, 1700 rds, 3 shot groups, running spreadsheet. Groups are still at 0.235-0.330 MOA. Slow but sure. I have some brass I've shot 17 times with annealing every 5 loadings

How many rounds are through the barrel? What is your over all length, not to the ogive but from tip to tip? My loaded rounds are 2.780 tip to tip and 3.135 to the ogive. So my bullets are pretty far down in the neck. Which is probably why I can't run the powder charges most others can. 40.6 is right at max for me. Make sure you work up slow. Some guys can use more powder. Just look at the brass and work up slowly.

2.835" is the oal on mine with the 130 JLK. that bullet is a little shorter than a Berger 130 vld also. the pressure ring of the bullet is just a litte past half way in the neck.

The barrel also has around 800rds through it. Im not getting any pressure signs on the cases and i think the heavy bolt lift is just the Savage action.

Have you considered Reloder 15? I get 2925 fps in a Criterion 30" match barrel with 130 VLD's seated at the lands with 37.3 grs powder and BR4 primers. No pressure signs at this level. Shoots very well!

I have tried RE-15 with the 123gr Scenars and MK's. I also used 37.3gr at 2920fps. It just seems to me that the 130's at 2840 dont have as good ballistics as the 123's at 2920?

Im just baseing that off some quick JBM calculations. I can shoot out to 375yds where i live and cant tell much difference at that distance. I believe I would have to go to 600+ yds to get a better idea.

Have you tried the 41 or 41.5 yet?

Not H4350, but here's what VarGet can do in the cartridge with a 130gn JLK

Every rifle is different, Varget "WILL" not shoot in my 6.5x47! With any bullet!

FYI! I hope Varget will work for yours, Most of my rifles like Varget, and shooting 120's or 123's w/Varget and RL15 is great in my 6.5x47, just don't use it with a 130!

Varget doesnt work in my rifle at all, RL15 is good but 41.5gr H4350 seated 3.150 shoots really well at all distances and temps... 28" Kreiger on Bat B in Edge stock... oh yeah CCI450's clocks 2950 fps

Varget is the powder that I use in my 6.5x47 with 140g bullets. 37.5g gets me around 2900fps with my 30" Criterion barrel. Usual warnings.

So far Ive only tried the H4350 with the 130 JLK's. I have shot RE-15 and Varget with 123 Scenars and Match Kings.

39.5 and 40.5gr of the H4350 shot very well. As soon as I can I want to try 41 and 41.5 to see what happens.

I dont think I can get enough velocity with the RE-15 or Varget with the 130's.

Im using a Savage target action and Im getting a little stiff bolt lift but no pressure signs. Again, I think it could be the action as Ive heard the Savages are know for a harder bolt lift??

Laurie,

I am glad you posted that link, I am not sure but thinking a 6.5x47L ai, would result in same case capacity as 260 rem but your link to http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/?s=darrel+evans&submit=Search

I have been working on loads for my new 260 straight, savage model 12 , of coarse I started with 4350 , sierra chose N150 as their accuracy load of 39.5, make a long story short N150 was far better then 4350 for me and I had some varget sitting around so I loaded it and ran it at 2925 with 123 SMK that was the same amount that Darrel used 38.3, this was two days ago and my 5 shot group was .3 moa, still going to do more with N150 just because I have a pound of it sitting here.

Yes, I've had best results to date from my .260 Rem with a 123gn Lapua Scenar over N150, very good indeed. However, I've barely started with the cartridge and still have a long way to go with it.

Returning to Darrell, I've shot with him off and on over the last 5 years and his performance with that Accuracy International AW has been amazing. He shot some fantastic groups with it with its original .308 Win barrel, but it has moved him to a new level with the 6.5X47L barrel. He's just won both Factory Sporter and Light Gun categories in our annual UKBRA 600yd winter series of bench rest matches. A bit galling for the owners of custom built Light Guns in everything from .22BR to 7mmWSM!

He didn't find 6.5X47L an easy cartridge to obtain top performance from initially and it took him a while and a few posts on forums before he found the right combination for his rifle and barrel. It seems to be a little 'picky' depending on the barrel specs, and the go-to load for one person may be hopeless for the next. (Erik will tell me I've got this wrong, I know!)

Laurie, I don't need to tell you what you already know! ;D I'm joking of course!

I have never had trouble getting the "47" to shoot, but I spec all my barrels the same way and on my current barrel I ended up with the exact same load as my last barrel, so I was pleased with that.

But I know what you mean, on my hunting rifle I had trouble getting it to shoot until I got away from Reloader 17 and tried N550; it shoots very good now.
