6.5x47 Questions

I'm building a 6.5x47 and kinda torn between which bullet/powder combo is the best to use with the best results. Either the 123 Bergers, the 130 Berger VLDs, the Berger 140 hybrids, and also the 142SMK. It is a 8 twist barrel, Defiance Deviant action in a McMillian A5 stock (bedded) I will be shooting from 100 to 1100yards. Thanks in advance.

Test them all. I tried 130vld, 130 hybrid, 136 scenar, 140 hybrid and 142 SMK and the SMK gave me the best MV, SDS and grouped the same as 140s. 26" 4 groove 1:8 Kreiger.

Chrome,
If H4350 doesn't work for you give Varget a try. My rifle drives tacks with 130 Berger VLD, Varget, and CCI 450 primers. Good luck.

My back up load is Varget with a 140/142. I lose about 40fps over H4350, but it's also less powder and shoots just as well. If I was running short barrels with the 47L, varget would be my go-to. In a 28" tube I have zero powder residue on the crown after 75-80 shots. Not sure where it finished burning, but it's way back in the barrel.

The barrel is going to be anywhere between 28" and 30".

....also, are you guys shooting brakes on these 6.5x47. To either stay on target and spot shots or to ease any, but light recoil?

I have a brake on my 26" TNS rifle. Recoil is less than a 223 and my rifle is relatively light with the carbon fiber stock and no adjustable bits. Beyond 500 I can pretty much spot shots if it impacts into dirt. If the target is in front of grass, forget it.

My 28" is on a single shot prone rifle, no brake. Very easy to shoot. I used it as a test to see how it compared to my 6.5x284s. On a decent day it's really close. When the wind is honking, the fagmag eats it up.

It will love RL15 pushing a SMK 123. Around 39 grs. Just my two cents Tommy Mc..

At first I considered the recoil of my 6.5x47 to be light but my 6BRX is spoiling me. Might have to get a brake for it. lol

So I like any powder that is the in the RL15, 4350, 4451 burn range.

i run the 130 vld's over H4350 in mine. i am not running a brake but am still able to spot hits as long as i am doing my part on proper recoil management. my gun is also about 15lbs so that helps for spotting as well. i know you're not really looking at the lighter bullets, but mine also shoots the 95 vmax at 3200 fps over a light load of benchmark out of the same 1:8 barrel and shoots little bug holes just as well as the 130s. just a thought as you could have a multipurpose gun like mine, 130s for long range targets or medium sized game and then the lighter vmax for coyotes and smaller game. sidenote: the 95s @ 3200 will absolutely obliterate a coyote, i have never seen holes like that in a coyote before.

Looks to me like your options are endless. The 6.5L is easy to tune and load. I'm using the 142 SMK because of the BC in south Texas wind. Pick one load for speed and another for the ballistic edge.

I initially went with 140gr Berger's because there was a huge BC advantage of 140's over 130's. Berger has since revised all of their BC's and now there is no advantage to the 140. It's a coin flip.
