6.5X47 Lapua?

I am in the process of acquiring parts to put together an AR15 and AR10. My question is this, how reliable would the 6.5X47 Lapua be in the AR platform? Thanks

I've had no problems with my Mega Arms AR10. I used JP's HP bolt & Low Mass Carrier with a SLR adjustable gas block. The HP bolt uses a smaller firing pin. No pierced primers which plagued those who use a regular 308 bolt with a bigger firing pin. Use PMags.

What length barrel are you running and is a heavier buffer required for optimum cycling and to take full advantage of low recoil of the AR rifle?

I'm running a 22 in Bartlein 1-8 twist. I do not use a buffer, I use the JP Silent Capture Recoil Spring. This along with their LMOS BCG and SLR adjustable gas control the cycling. Great set up.

Awesome, thanks for the info! This tells me it can be done successfully. If anyone else has anything they want to add please do.

To be completely honest I would really like a 260 AI. My understanding is the AI cases don't feed well in the AR platform. I don't care for the 6.5 Creedmoor because of a lack of brass options. I've heard good things about Hornady's loaded ammo brass but not much on their component brass. My experience with their 308 and 223 brass leaves alot to be desired. I don't want to have to buy factory ammo for brass. Nosler makes brass but I've heard and read very mixed reviews and the cost is up there with Norma and Lapua without the reputation. Wanting a 6.5 AR10 and presented with limited options because of what's acceptable to me is how I came up with the 6.5X47 Lapua. If I have missed something or there is any fallacies in my thinking please share. I'm in the infancy stages of planning with an open mind. Thanks again

Honestly with a x47 your limited with one kind of brass thats hard to get your hands on at times and when you do its very expensive to be flinging everywhere with a gasser. Why not go strait .260?

Absolutely! The 260 gives very little away to the 47L in precision, will run the same velocities but at considerably lower pressures (good thing in a gas gun I'd have thought!), has some excellent brass available, and now that the nice Mr Litz has designed a high-BC but shorter 6.5mm bullet, the Berger 130gn AR-Hybrid, the last objection to 260 in an AR-platform has been removed. No worries about small primer blanking either.

You both make very convincing points to which I have no good reasons to refute. The brass thing didn't escape me in the least. The only reason I had for picking the X47L is the plain and simple fact that it's different. When you've never ventured too far outside the box for as long as you've been shooting, when the bug really grabs you something different starts calling. The 260 Remington has come to mind many times. If brass couldn't be found I could easily make it from the 308 Winchester brass I already have. About the only thing different I would need in a pinch is bullets and powder. Fortunately those are more readily available than they have been. Like I said infancy stages and an open mind has me yet again rethinking my options. The new Berger bullet was news to me, that's always good to know. While the 260 is not really different it is certainly practical and will serve my purpose.

Ive built many 6.5 x 47 AR-10s. In doing the R&D early on, we learned many things. Burned 1000s of rounds of 47L in the AR and truly love the round.

Factory Lapua 47L ammo shoots very well in the AR-10 also, if you can afford it.

Ive made alot of unicorns cry by banging up Lapua brass in the AR, about seven firings - and then I scrap it.

Built and competed with the 6.5 Creed and .260 Rem in AR-10 also, but prefer the 47L. Won a AR steel plate championship in 2013 with the 47L.

Shot the 6.5 Creed AR-10 today at 600 yards with factory Hornady 140 ELD ammo, and really enjoyed it. Shooting it in a match Saturday using Hornady ELD ammo.

PM me for more tech info on AR-10s if needed.

After all was said and done I ended up going with the 6.5 Creedmoor. I'll also second the Geissele trigger recommendation. I have 4 Hi-Speed National Match triggers and I like them a lot. If I build another AR style rifle and a two stage trigger fits the build the Hi-Speed National Match trigger is what I'll put in it.

Oh Lordy, Lordy !! You'll bring down great wrath, if not biblical plagues of boils or maybe of frogs in the kitchen, upon yourself for admitting such a sin on the AS Forum. If Moses were still around and in the business of bringing God's Commandments down from the mount on stone tablets, I'm sure No.11 would be 'Thou must not ever specify 6.5mm Creedmoor in a quality custom rifle'. :)

Even more heinous, 6.5X47L was rejected and The Abomination chosen in its place. !!! (Good choice anyway, I'd reckon for this application.)

It's all good. I use to be one of those that poopooed the Creedmoor round. Now ironically enough I have 2 rifles chambered in it. For some to not like the round so much there sure seems to be a lot of shooters using it. Whether it be the 6.5 or 6mm variant. The Creedmoor has a great OAL for feeding from a box magazine and doesn't have bullet seating issues of some other cartridges. Now, I like the 6.5 Creedmoor and don't regret my decision at all. I wonder if I would redeem or dig myself a deeper hole by saying I'm in the process of putting together another rifle in 264 Winchester magnum?

I too have pondered the building of a 264 Win Mag as I sometimes like to resurrect some of the old has beens ( I have a 6mm Rem & a 225 Win). Keep us posted on your progress.
PS
Put a TriggerTech AR Diamond in you AR10.

The new rifle is all but built just waiting on parts. It's being built on a used Savage action that I picked up for a decent price. I have a 26" Shilen select match bull contour barrel on order. I'll most likely put an Area 419 hellfire brake on it. The barreled action is going into a XLR Industries Evolution chassis. The Pic rail and rings will definitely come from Badger Ordnance. The only thing I'm not sure about yet is glass but it will wear an Accuracy 1st bubble level when I do.

As a side note, it's hard to believe I started this post over 3 years ago. Plus the rifle related to this post has been completed for at least half that time.
