Gun will be used for F class mid and long range shooting. I want to get down to one gun so i can learn it and hopefully the conditions as well. I have both 6.5x47 and 6.5x284 new barrels in 28 inch bull , which one do i use? thanks

The 1 that shoots the best. There is not enough difference in those 2 rounds that 1 would have a great adavntage over the other. I would try them both and use the most accurate one.

There is quite a bit of difference between the 2 cartridges that you mention. Many believe that a 6.5 x 47 L doesn't have enough boiler room to drive the 139-142 gr bullets at the right velocity. Now, if you want to use a short action 6.5 cartridge to push those heavy pills as fast as the 6.5 x 284, consider a .260 Rem Improved.

I for one don't believe that. My 6.5x47 is very accurate with 139 gr. Scenars.

I used to shoot a 6.5-284, when it has about 1000 rounds through it I had it set back and rechambered to 6.5x47 Lapua and have never looked back.

The problem with the 6.5-284 is that by the time you find a good load for it you only have about 500 - 700 rounds of usable barrel life left. With the "47", you still have about 2,000+ rounds after a good load has been found.

I agree with what Erik said about the 6.5x284, not too many X's left after load development and the possibility of your barrel falling flat on its face midway thru the season.

Please let me explain what I mean't. I have no doubt that your 6.5x47 is very accurate with the 139 Lapua's. I know that it is an extremely accurate cartridge. I should have written "Some" people think that it doesn't have the horse power to push those heavy pills. (I personaly don't shoot a 6.5 caliber so I probably shouldn't have replied to this posting) I was refering to Catfish' reply about "there is not enough difference in those 2 rounds", when there really is quite a difference in velocity. I am not trying to start any arguments. In fact, if I were to build a 6.5 caliber for 800 yards or less, I would defineately go with the 6.5x47L chambering.

this will be my F class gun to be used in mid range and long range, not just 800 and closer. i have both barrels new but dont know which one to put on. decisions..

I found a load in my current 6.5-284 in only about 40 rounds. I expect to have a lot of barrel left to shoot with. I picked up where I left off with my last one and voila- just what I was looking for.

The 6.5-284 has a really good track record. Is it any better than the 6.5-47? Who knows! I think you will be fine wit either one if you stay away from 1000 yds. If you are going to shoot 1000 yds, I would lean towards a 260AI or 6.5-284. I have one of each. Only 150 fps difference between them with the heavier bullets.

It truly depends on what you want.

The extra performance is nice if you are not that good at reading wind or are going to also use that rifle to hunt with.

ok problem solved, just picked up another f class stock so i am putting both the new barrels together, i will be able to try both . guess wont hurt to have two. ;D

I like the 6.5x284.Finding a load was quick and easy, thanks to the info on this site.Barrell life is short, but longer than you think if you keep it clean and control the carbon. Lightman
