It depends on what you are looking for. I built a 6.5X47 Lapua for 600 yard benchrest. I would not consider a .308 for this.

What is you useage?

The 6.5x47 is going to be a lot more forgiving in the wind. Go ahead and build it, you will be glad you did!

was building it for informal plicking/gongs maybe some varmint shooting..as i said, this will be more of a training type rifle for learning to shoot at longer ranges..thank you for your help and input..any more suggestions?~Danny

Danny, the 6.5X47 Lapua between the ranges of 600 and 1000 yds will drop substantially less and drift less and will be much more pleasant to shoot. My particular 6.5 is in a hunting stock and has a 24" Kreiger barrel and shoots sub 3/4" @ 300yds. and will hit a 6" gong with boring regularity @600yds. As I get older I find that less recoil allows me to focus on my technique and hold much better than those with more recoil.

If you are shooting at 800, it won't be long before you figure out a way to go longer. That is when the 6.5 will out shine the 308. I shot my last 1000yd match with a 308 for F/TR. The open guys with the 6.5 calibers were out shooting me with ease. As other said, less drift and drop. These really add up the longer you try to reach out.

Dropped off the rifle at the gun-smiths this morning, going with the 6.5x47...talked to a couple more guys about there 6.5xx47s,so far everyone I talked to says this is the way to go..should be done in a couple weeks..picked up some 123smk & 123amaxs,could not find any 130/140 berger hunting VLD,s or 140 amax, the reamer is the long throated one for the VLD style bullets ..I have a jug of varget and 1lb of R-15,any suggestions?

I have been seeing a lot of loads for R-17 ,looks like i will need to pick some up too..also I have 6lbs of IMR4350 is it that much different from H4350? reducing the firing pin size(Rem 700)..does it really need to be done or I am reading too much sales talk?~Danny

i would go with the 6.5x47. less recoil, less powder, cheaper to shoot, more slippery bullets, good barrel life (although probably not as good as .308)

RL-17 works good with the "47", as does VV N550.

There is not that much difference between H4350 and IMR4350, but IMR4350 is a little faster than H4350, so you will need to use a little less powder with the IMR4350. Not much, about 0.5 gr. difference.

As far as bushing the firing pin, I would definetly have it done.

6.5x47 all the way. Seems like everyone covered just about all the highlights. I have two of them. One that shoots 37.2 of Varget and 123's at 2950 and The other that shoots 140 Bergers at 2900 with R17.

Would not even consider a 308.

Thanks alot guys, for all the info!!...tic toc,tic toc...i will be having the firing pin bushed when I get it back..I hope the 6.5x47 page shows up soon..not complaining, this is a great site~Danny

6.5x47 Lapua??

Yes sir....no problem!

Here's 5 rounds from 1300 yds. Does this on a regular basis I might add! Not quite centered up as this was the 2nd group fired with it but I've got it centered up now!

Yep,

123's with Varget and Rel 15

130's with H4350

140's with Rel 17 and if Erik says VV N550, than so be it!

I have yet to need to trim the brass with over 950 firings of 145 pieces of brass. Incredibly easy to load for. Plenty of data, here, that simply works.

Oh, yeah, stock up on CCI 450 sm rifle primers.

That was fired with 38.0 grs. Varget (because of 95F temps) and 123 gr. Sierra HPBT. It shoots the 130 gr. VLD Berger same way...to same POI. Once temps drop down in the 65F range...I go to 40.5 Varget. My chrony is being reworked; an Oehler 35P but I think it's moving these along right around 3000 fps. Have Krieger 1-8.5 ROT barrel.

What is a rot barrel. Dont understand what an RV contour is either.
