6.5X47 Help

as a genral rule of thumb ,as your have probably concluded by reading what loads people have just posted, VLD type bullets genrally like eigther to be seated into the lands (.015 or so) or way off the lands (say .015 or more off) thats why i think you were having trouble with the berger VLD's .05" off the lands.

6.5X47 Help

I seat the berger 130 VLD 0.040 (yep 40 thou) off the lands (jump) in my 6.5x47L on a Stolle with a Kreiger. Shoots like absolute stink and only last weekend set a a new unoffical light gun record at 500m fly. Load is 37.5gr of 2208 (varget) with CCI BR4 and Lapua cases.

But hey while I am at it anyone got a good load with varget for the 123 SMK? Bergers are pretty hard to source over here at the moment and looking for options. Ive stocked up with about 900 Bergers at the moment but be nice to have a back up load.

cheers

Do you know what the spec's are on the reamer that was used in your barrel??? Freebore, leade, neck diameter??? I'am assuming the barrel is a 8 Twist??? Thanks

Sorry, I don't have all that info. The invoice does state it is a Krieger 1:8, 4 groove barrel. The work was done by Mark Pharr down in Austin,TX.

Yay, I get to contribute! :D

I got to load test some 123 SMK loads (.020 jump) for my brand new Tikka 595 Master Sporter in 6.5x47 Lapua (By MTGuns). I found 36 gn. Varget shot very well. I also tested 37gn. Varget and got very similar results (maybe better, need more testing). I do not know my velocities, but I used JBM to estimate that the 36gn load was about 2880 fps(Still, that seems fast to me for a 26'' barrel). I based my guess on local environmentals(98 *F, calm wind, ~29.5 in. Hg), altitude(~400 asl), and 500m come up (~3.0 Mils). At 37.5 I got a little sticky bolt and slight ejector swipe so I stopped there.

Hope that helped,

Dane

6.5X47 Help

I had a reamer cut with .105 freebore because I never planned on shooting anything bigger than a 130 gr. bullet, as my 6.5x47 was going to be a dedicated 600 yd. prone rifle. I experimented with every powder listed by previous posters and 123 SMK's, 130 Berger's and JLK's. Jumping, jamming or in the lands, I never got what I would consider performance that I felt was match worthy. Then I went back to some early data and loaded 10 rounds with N-150 and a 123 SMK,
and another 10 rounds with the 130 JLK's. At 100 yards the 130 JLK's were the obvious choice, however, when I went to the range and shot them at distance (600 yds) the 130's would barely hold the 10 ring. On the other side the 123's shot 10 X's. This test was to prove to myself that a small group at 100 yds. doesn't mean it will shoot well at distance. On another note, I normally shoot Wolf primers for all my comp. rifles. For some reason, the 6.5x47 prefers the CCI 450's so that is what I use.
I hope this helps,
Lloyd

I know that you are using the 123's and 130's but if you ever get a chance to try the 142g Sierra or the 140g Berger they might suprise you.

Here is a 600 yard group with the 142's. The velocity is only 2730 fps so your 26" barrel should be able to atain that.

Nice group Dave (my father's name is David Bailey!)
I have used the 140gr Berger LR-BT in my 6.5x47 with good success. I could get it going 2850-ish w/ H4360 and RL15 and it always was sub 0.50 from my 26" 8twist Hart. I did switch to 130gr JLK, which I can get going 2940-ish with H4350 and the 130gr JLK has essentially the same BC as the 140gr LR-BTs.

What rifle did you use to shoot this group?

It's my midrange F-Class rifle.
Barnard action, Shehane MBR stock, Kreiger 8.5 twist barrel and a Nightforce 12-42 BR scope.
