6.5x47 Barrel Twists/lenghts

If there is already a thread on the different twists and bullets for the 6.5x47, can someone direct me, please.?

If not, I am inclined to build a 6.5x47, and need info on different twists/lenghts and their performances. I am still at the starting point. Still need to sell some items in order to fund this project.

Just some knowledge on what bullet weight and twist are appropriate.
I already read the 6.5x47 guide on the home page. I use Reloader 15 for my current GA Crusader 308 and have plenty of powder, so might stay with that powder for a while. However i am open to trying different loads.

Thanks for any input. If further info is needed on what I will be using it for, please let me know.

The most popular twist rate is 8 to 8.5 twist, I shoot a 8tw with 140 vlds and burn H4350 with a 30 inch barrel. RL 15 may work better with 120-130 bullets.

From my experience and talking with fellow shooters. The guys shooting 140's have better luck with H4350 and 8 twist. The guys shooting 130's like RL15. I haven't ask their twist rate, but I would use 8.5 for 123-130's. I picked up some 123 and 136 Lapua's, but haven't had time to try them out yet.

I have no clue what I am doing, but with a lot of mentoring my new 6.5x47 Lapua has a 28 1/2" Barrel, 1:8 twist and freebore for 120s so that with a little throat wear I will be able to move to 130 Hybrids as I am not experienced enough to fool with working up loads for the VLDs yet.

I use a 27in Bartlein barrel with a 1-8 twist.. It gets me over a 1.6 stability factor.. I also use H4350 and 140gr bullets.. If I was to try 130gr. I would for sure test out Varget real good...

I just finished my 6.5x47 build about a month ago so I know how you are feeling trying to get everything figured out. I ended up going with a 28" light varmint contour Krieger barrel with an 8 twist. My primary load is H4350 and berger 130 vlds and my secondary load is benchmark and 95 gr vmax. The 8 twist handles them both extremely well as both will shoot sub .25 moa 5 shot groups @ 100 if I do my part in the loads and on the trigger.

This has been an extremely easy caliber to load for. Highly accurate and has quickly became my new favorite caliber. Low recoil, high bc bullets and good barrel life led me to this caliber and I'm glad I went with it. From target shooting to varmints and plenty of potential for deer if I ever get a chance to take it outside IL.

Good luck with your build. I would highly suggest following Erik Cortina's load development method found in this site. Have had unbelievable results using it on 6 different rifles now.

For a general build and not knowing your intended bullet class or purpose a 1-8 will cover all common bullets. As for barrel lengths and speeds, the barrel is only one consideration depending on what you want to do. If you want to push 140's on the upper end, free bore and fire pin will come into play.

I ran a 8.5 twist 4 groove 25 inch Krieger with 130 VLDs. 38.1 gr Varget was giving me 2875 ish velocity with low ES/SD and very stellar accuracy.

I'm running a 22" 8 twist barrel with a suppressor attached. For a load I'm using 37gr of reloder 15 and 123gr Lapua scenars. Great accuracy ( best has been 1/4 moa at 200yds). Based on ballistics at 800 yds my velocity is right at 2750 which is exactly where I wanted to be.

I have a CBI 26 inch 8 twist. I use RL15 and use both 120 and 130 grain bullets. Haven't tried any heavier bullets. Seems to like the 120's the best.

I have 27 inch Bergara tube with 8" twist, shooting 130gr VLDs and 140gr A-Max....
x_wolf,, how do you like that Bergara barrel?? They sponsored the last Woody's PRS match I was in and I have a nice t-shirt from them... I understand their barrels are at a good price compared to others??? Have you shot one of their barrels out yet or are you new to the brand???

I've had a couple 6.5x47Ls...one was a 8.5 twist Kreiger HV 4 groove at 30" which was a 140FB and shot 130vld and H4350 or Varget into tiny little groups. This was a BAT

The other is built on a R700 and shilen barrel at 27", which is 1:8 twist and still shoots 130 VLD into little groups with H4350. I've also shot the 140VLD with varget pushing it and it did not shoot as well as the H4350.

I've tried RL15, RL17, Varget, and H4350 and have to say from my experience the H4350 is pretty darn good with 130s and 140s, I have some 123 scenars but have yet to try them...my guess is varget or RL15 would do the 123 well. If you want any more info or data PM me..

I have one being built right now that I am trying to decide what reamer to use, 140FB or 160FB...leaning towards the 140...

I built up a 6.5x47 not knowing what I was doing but did read all I could about it on accurate shooter. I have a 28in bull barrel on a custom savage action with 8oz trigger and a heavy f class stock. boy was I lucky. as I only will shoot berger bullets. I use h-4350 with 450 primers and use the same 40gr load for 130&140 bullets. 130 2950fps=140 2835fps. I now shoot only 140 hybrids. this gun holds all records at range out to 1400yds. has killed a ton of jackrabbits at 800 to 1000 yds if not to much wind. set up with zero headspace and laupa brass will last forever. as you can see I love this gun!

I have three other Bergara barrels (6.5mm and 7mm) they all shoot just fine. Soon I have to put new tube to my factory Sendero 300WM. I´ll go with Bergara again. Good price and the bore is already factory lapped. If I would order Lothar Walther I have to pay extra fee for lapping...
