6.5x47 142 Nosler LRAB RL19

testing some slower than H4350 powders with the 142 LRAB looking for all the speed I can get to use as a shooting house 5-600 yard whitetail deer load to use from my PRS style rifle,,H 4350 hits pressure at 2775 fps in my 27.25 inch 5R bartlien 8 twist bbl,,
I thought I would start trying slower powders and see if I could get up around the 2900 fps range and hold 4 inch groups at 500 yards,,

gonna try RL 16,RL 17 ,H4831,Hybird 100,,Norma 204,IMR 4831 A3100 and the likes of powders,,I had RL19 on hand so I started there,,and with a 12 inch drop tube I can get 45.2 grs of RL 19 in the 47L case up to the bottom of the neck and with the freebore my smith used none of the bullet goes down past that shoulder neck junction,,

I started at 43 grs and worked up .5 grs at a time 2 shots per charge just checking speed and pressure, at 45 grs the Magnetospeed registered 2915 fps and didnt really have any pressure signs and bolt lift was smooth as silk,,

I am gonna try RL 16 and 17 next and would like to see if I hit pressure before I get powder up to the NSJ and what the speeds are at that point,,

I know that the H4350 load is king for accuracy in this bbl and it maxes out at 2775,,which would work but when hunting live animals I would rather have the extra knock down energy at 500 yards as long as it will hold the 4 inch groups at that range,,

and IME if you can find the powder that maxes out pressure wise at 100% load density and has the highest FPS of all the powders that it will shoot very well indeed,,

most people think I am crazy and thats fine but if I can get 2900+ with good field accuracy on game with the 142 Nozler that my confidence in making the shot when it counts will be through the roof,,

after I get the max load with these powders I will go back and tune the one that is the fastest and see if I can get it to shoot the 4 inch 500 yard groups to hunt with,,
I shoot this rifle a lot and am really used to it and the Sightron scope on it is second nature,,and I have hunted this spot for 35-38 years and have the yardages to ever spot engrained in my mind,,if a deer shows I can tell within 5 yards how far it is without a rangefinder or anything else,,I wont be shooting this hot load except for hunting or maybe when we go to a steel plate shoot where there are targets to 1500 yards or so,,

just thought I would post my findings from today that with a 12 inch drop tube and a slow pour you can get 45 grs RL19 in the 47L case and it will push the 142 at over 2900 with no pressure and I will be back and update how well it will shoot or if it wont stay on the paper

peace out,,

I'm getting 2850 with 140gr Hybrids and 7828ssc in my x47. Same powder gave me 2740 with 147gr ELDs. Seems that slow burning powders with heavy bullets is relatively unexplored territory in the 6.5x47. My experience is showing it to be worth investigating though...

How long is your barrel? I am hoping to get the 135 Classic Hunter Berger over 2800 fps out of my 23" 5R Bartlien.

IMG_1431.JPG 6.5x47 Lapua 2903fps (labradar) with 28" Proof Research barrel, with 142gr. SMK & 42.5 gr. H4350. This is where I started to barely get ejector pin smile. Another note, this is with PTG 1 piece bolt and .062" firing pin.

my bbl is 27.5" and the Tac 30 action uses the same PTG bolt with the .062 pin,,,

my go to accuracy load is the 130 VLD with 42.2-43 grs H4350 depending on the lot of powder and runs between 2,980 and 3,000 fps ...
