6.5x47 139-140g load data help

I have a 1in8 twist krieger it shoots the 130vld great 41g h4350 cci450 but have tried 140vlds with no luck. 41.5g n550 2850fps with 140s but large groups. Let me know if you have load that works with 139-140 vlds or lapuas. The longrange charactoristics of this bullet are so much better than the 130s or 123s. I know on paper it isn't that much but on the range the 140s consistantly win at 1000yds especially in the wind. I have gotten over 2900fps with n550 and the 140s which is the same as my 6.5x284 that I shoot in competition. The twist is the same on both guns not sure why smaller case isn't shooting well with the 140s. My touching overall length with 140 berger is 2.850" with 130s is 2.825". send me your best loads.

thanks

Load data for the 140ish bullet is on this forum. Its possible the 140vld may not be loved by your barrel. I shoot the Lapua 139 with 40.5 of H4350. However, my go to is the 123 lapua with 38.5 of Varget. Shot this at 1000 at Butner. The group was the same or better compared to the 130 vld. I think your pushing the capacity of this great cartridge to the max with 140's. At max, stuff happends at 1000. If 140's are your flavor, then the 6.5x284 is the deal. I used the Lapua 144's in the 6.5x284 with great success.

Thanks for the info. What velocity are you getting with the h4350 and the 139g- 41g and a 130g i get 2800fps shoots great. You are correct the 6.5x284 is king but also the king of the barrel grave yard..

I have no clue to the velocity. The load was published on this forum. I've been using these published loads with great success for the 6.5X47. I start out a grain and onehalf less and then shoot for GROUP at 300 meters.

My load for 6.5X47 Lapua using 139 Scenars is 42 gr. Reloader 17. I have a .200" freebore and my COAL is 2.850", this might be a very hot load in your gun if not throated really deep like mine. I have a 28" bbl and the velocity is 2925 fps.

My favorite for the 140 berger VLDs is RL-17 at 40.5 and that gets me to 2850.
I shot solid .5 or better groups to 800 yards, which is as far as I have a place to shoot.
My gun is throated for the 130s, but it really likes the 140s and that's all I shoot now.

Good luck,
Robbin

I'd be very keen to hear when the accuracy falls off.
How many rounds down it now?

cheers

That was my old 6.5x284 barrel. I had it set back 2" after about 1000 rounds. I now have about 750 through it as a 6.5 x 47 Lapua and accurracy is great. My gunsmith looked at it with a borescope and tells me it should easily go another 750. We'll see! ;D

I have just finished load devlopment for my 6.5x47 Lapua. I concentrated on the Berger 140 VLD bullets..
Chamber reamer was a Dave Kiff with 0.140 Freebore. Shillen Select Match RR barrell finished at 28".

I started with CCI Br4's under some AR2208 (Varget) and maxed out at 39 Gns for 2920 FPS with loose pockets after 2 firings, so a very hot load. Accuracy was ok at 37 Gns with groups hovering arround 0.5 moa. I then switched to CCI Magnum primers and maxed out at 38.5 with loose pockets after 2 firings. However with the magnum primers groups suddenly shrank by arround 0.25 moa.. Finial load was 37.7 Gns or AR2208 over a Magnum primer, Berger 140 VLD set at 0.015 Jam, 2785 FPS. Average of 5, 5 shot groups was just under 0.3 MOA.

I also worked up some loads using VV N140 but found this powder a but lacking in the velocity dept. Could barely reach 2800 FPS before pressure became an issue. Group sizes arround 0.5 moa. I think N540 might be a better choice for this cart..

Nice accuracy Leeroy.
I wonder how the 1000yd wind drift numbers of this load compare to a 123 Scenar at 2945? Must feed it into the ballistics prog sometime.

Yeah wondered that my self mate.. I ran the numbers with the Berger 130 VLD against the 140 VLD.. To get the same wind drift as a 140 at 2785 fps you need to push the 130 vld up to at least 2950. It's possable but that would be absolute MAX for the this cart before pressure became an issue and i doubt you'd get the best accuracy at max loading. Still i might try some of the 130's and see how they go..

You should try N550 you can get over 3000fps with 42g no pressure signs in my gun. Accuracy with the 130s was great. CCI br4s or 450s . A bunch of tacticle shooters are using this combo with great success. Varget with the 140s I tried not much success low velocity and killed my brass 38.5g hard to lift the bolt.

i got 5 pound of rl-17 on the way and quite a few 140 a-maxes. I'm going to start some testing here shortly. good lord I can't wait for the weather to break.

i am loading 140 vld with 40 gr h-4350 getting 2830fps.coal is .2815. this shoots great out to 1000yds. my range is at 800ft but have to shoot up hill at 14d==also across two gullys so drift is big problem some days! on some days i can hit 5in gong all day at 1000yds. gun has 28in bbl with muzzle brake. great caliber!!!!
