6.5x47 &130 Berger vld

Hi all,

I have a new tactical rifle in the abv cal, this shoots extremely well with Lap Factory 123 scenar ammo and even better with home loads,123 scenar) I have shot several screamer 5 shot groups with it, BUT I cannot get the Berger 130 to group under 1/2" I have tried seating depth changes, powder changes and primers? could it be my barrel just likes the Scenar?
I initally used R15 with CCI BR 2 and N150, the rifle shoots 123's with virtully any powder charge from 37gr upwards.
I started development at .10thou off the lands and ended up .15 thou in,with the Bergers)
I have sort of decided to leave alone and shoot the Scenars but I do have 500 130's "in stock" ! I may try them in my 6.5x284 F gun an see what happens.
any comments or suggestions would be welcome.

thanks

GLC

on bergers website they say something about Starting just touching with one group, .040 off with the next, .080 off and .120 off.
Read it for yourself from there web site, Berger Bullets Info its the last paragraph on that page

I've found that what they say works within around 12 thou, meaning it's usually within 12 thou from one of those settings. I've even went in as far as 150 off the lands and started playing from there so they would feed from my mag.
Best of luck,

To the OP,

Realize this has been 11 months since this post was initiated. In talking with several folks to include the folks at Surgeon rifles, 37.5 gr of Varget, give or take a few tenths, is the Cat's Meow with the 130 Berger.

Re: 6.5x47 &130 Berger vld

Thanks GSSP, co-incidentially I am about to test varget with the scenars so will try the bergers and post my results !

With regards from the very cold Snowbound UK!

Re: 6.5x47 &130 Berger vld

I also recommend Varget with the 130VLDs, I used a load of 38.5gr and this launched the Bergers at around 3000fps (30" barrel). Remember to start lower than this and work up the load!

I have since changed over to 139gr Scenars with the same load (38.5gr) for a velocity of 2900fps (32" barrel) and the accuracy is really good. I point up the Lapua Scenars and find that as good as the Berger 130VLDs were the 139gr Scenars are better.

This load is without pressure signs in my Barnard action but be careful working up to it as it seems a number of people on this site have difficulty getting up to these loads.

Ian--I believe the reason most have trouble duplicating your loads/performance with 140 bullets is you have a long freebore, as I remember. With your bullets seated far out, it makes a big difference on case volume.

Re: 6.5x47 &130 Berger vld

Been shooting the 6.5x47 for two years at 300 meters, 600 yards, 1000 yards.
If there is one choice its the 123 grain Lapua, 38.5 grains of varget, not touching, all the way to 1000.
Shot 130 Bergers with 41.5 of H4350 all the way to 1000. I too have 1000 Berger Bullets but its my last buy.
The 123 Laupua fills the needs all the way to 1000.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Ben
