Lapua VV powder for 6.5x47, N150?

Does any know what VV powder Lapua uses in the factory loaded 123gr rounds? Has anybody had any luck with N150 in this case? It has the same burn rate as H4350, for use with 123, 130 gr bullets?

chubbyrooster,

Lapua (VihtaVouri) manufactures and uses many non-canister powders. Factory ammo (of all types) is loaded to a pressure specification, velocity is secondary, powder lots vary so quantities are adjusted to make the pressure specification rather than using velocity. In essence, they blend large quantities of powder to achieve a pressure level for every cartridge/bullet combination. This takes the error out of using cannister powders with variable lots of pressure.

I just finished a 6.5x47 which when tested with the 123's was running about 2850 fps using the VVN-540 from a 23" barrel. I ran some of the N-140 and N-150 which showed that the 150 was just a touch slow and the 140 was just a touch fast. This is not to say that neither one is unusable, quite the contrary since both will perform quite well given proper load development.

Here is the cartridge guide from this website:

Regards.

Kurz, thank you for the information. Makes sense, I am shooting a 30 inch bbl. maybe the 150 will have enough time to complete burn. I have had really good success with N150 in all my 308 comp. guns. I am going to give it a try. If the velocity is way down, the powder my be too slow for this bullet case combo.
Best Regards

IMHO, N150 is too slow. I think you will have better luck with N133 or N135.....N140 would be the last choice for me. My 6.5s liked N130 but it is hard to find, and when you do, it is only in the 1lb containers. I went from the N130 to AA2015....wish I could find the N130

I use N550 in a 260 Mega gas gun. It is incredibly clean and consistent. I'd imagine it would be fine for 6.5 x 47's slightly smaller case.

N150 should work okay I have used it with 140s even though the charts list it near h4350 it is faster more like rl 15

Well Powder Valley has N130. I know that VV only offers it in a 1 pound container but it's there for the buying.

I just discovered how good VV 150 is in the 6.5 X 47 Lapua last night. Had 4 shots within 1" at 500 yards with 38.0 gr of VV 150 and a 130 Berger VLD. I don't know why so many people are saying it is to slow etc. A member on this forum posted 2 exceptional groups at 1000 yards using this exact load in his 6.5 X 47. I am very impressed with it accuracy wise.

Well, don't let the cat out of the bag. It's certainly 'too slow' and you should send the N150 my way for disposal.

Truth is; 150, 140, 133 and the subsequent 5series should give good results; depends on your rifle and seating / chamber parameter. Certainly give it a try, just take the recommendations here with a grain of salt and don't acquire 8+lbs on our word only. Also remember lot to lot variation; so your 8lbs might need a slight tweak in charge weight from the 1lb.
