6.5x47. Short Ogive?

Just got my new 6.5x47 from the smith. It has a .123 freebore. When I measure the OAL to the Ogive I get 2.1055 with a 123 scenar. That sounds awfully short. In fact, I have some factory Lapus 123 sendar ammo and it measures 2.165. It was extreamly tough to chamber and when I ejected it, it pulled the bullet out of the loaded case.

My smith says that I need to load much shorter than the factory ammo and I sould just reseat the factory ammo shorter and use it. This is the first time I have heard of factory ammo being too long. Usually it is way to short to play it safe. (And I am not too sure what kind of pressure spike I will have seating the factory ammo shorter).

What OAL Ogive measurements do you all have for a 123 scenar?

That doesn't sound right. I have a .125 freebore and shoot 123 scenars measuring 2.164 at 18 off the lands?

I am pretty sure that factory ammo is manufactured to the CIP spec. The CIP chamber is has a 164-167 FB. Then there are also tolerances and wear on reamers that can affect actual FB.

I run a .118fb and 123scenars touch the lands right at 2.1". So everything sounds fine to me. A 118 to 123 FB is my favorite FB for most 6.5 bullets (to include 140hyb,130hyb,123smk,123scenar,140jlk,136hoover) Those are the bullets I have experience with in the 6.5x47. The 118 FB is long enough to put all of those bullets bearing surface above the neck/shoulder junction.

I also have .090"FB and .164FB reamer. Overall the .118 just seams to produce the best accuracy and widest nodes. However, I know plenty of people that have excellent experiences with reamers that are .160-.175fb.

Best Regards
Scott

Thanks Scott. I was worried when the factory ammo would not fit. But my worries were quickly put aside when I shot my first set of pressure test for my load work up. My rifle is shooting great with both 123 and 130. I have found the node range and will be refining the load next weekend.

You really need a freebore of about .140 for the 123 Scenars, 123 SMK's or the 130 Berger VLD's..

my first reamer for 123's was a 109FB. Spec by Jerry stiller that rifle shot lights out....in the high 1's all day long my second reamer i went 115 for the berger 130 AR's....agree 140 works but dont need it for 123's....i think something weird happened short chamber wrong reamer.....dont know....hows the bolt close?...

I have shot 123 scenars, 130 bergers and 140 bergers all out of a .160 freebore. When I first recieved mine it was a .120 and I didn't like that. I sent it back and my smith ordered a new reamer with a 160 and I have great luck. Fill it up with H4350 and shoot whatever you want and it should not disappoint.
