6.5x284 with hornady 147 eld match

CCI200 primer...47.3 H4350...just touching lands...this load gave 1.350 agg across half dozen groups at 300 yds. May shoot better in your rifle. Kreiger 8tw...150 smk actually does better. I like the 147, it shoots great in one of my 6.5 x 47's but 6.5 x 284 seems to like 150's.
I use 8 twist....its working fine for me. Only shot 1,000 once and usually shoot 500 yds. Others are using faster twist with good luck. There is another thread on this subject...150 smk update I believe. You might check it out. Many shooters contributed some great info! Some have also had the 150's blowup...not my experience but it could happen!

H 1000 or RL 26 works well in my 26" Shilen barreled Savage with the 147s, 51.5 g of RL 26 is about 2940 with 2.4 SD 5 ES
I've gone all the way up to 3000 with RL 23 but the primers started getting flat past 2950 with either powder.
I was so sorry i did not understand what was going on sooner, i know how frustrated you were.
The 7mm ELD frag also, we saw many of them fail when we tested them and tried to help hornady, they say nothing is wrong we dont know what we are doing basically.
There have been some other real match disasters, your not alone.
The 22s work real well.

Had the old 140 Amax's blow up in my 6.5X284 1-8 tw when they first came out. Don't shoot Hornady at all. Just rebarreled my 6.5X284 with a 7.5 twist. will try the 150 SMK's.

Graff has 150 SMKs, been really hard to get.

I've shot about 1500 of them and no problems in a number of different rifles all with 8tw. Low velocity around 2740-2770 and 5 shot strings. 15 shot strings, high velocity and fast twist is probably the issue. 1,000 yard competition puts everything to the test!

They shot OK for me in f class but not great. The bullet design required me to seat them deeper than I like too. I fought that dreaded donut with them based upon seating depth. Berger 140 hybrids are and will be my first choice for that caliber. Can seat longer and they fly great with H3450.
I have not heard much of this going on. I don't shoot F-Class like the rest of you. That would be terribly disappointing to have a bullet blow up in a match. Since I mainly have 1, 2 or 3 shots and I am done. Has this problem occurred with a cold bore or do they need to get warm as AREA 51 mentioned? Thank you for the heads up.
I kind of laugh at this because it wasn't very long ago that the 6.5x284 was dominant and folks would say you had to shoot one to be competitive. Only the experimenters would vary from the chosen path of 6.5x284 shooting 142 SMKs, 139 Scenars, or Berger 140s.

I've had great luck with the 147 in my 6.5 Creedmoor. I wouldn't hesitate to give it a try in your 6.5x284. The price is certainly attractive! Hornady released load data for it:

RL-26 is probably going to give you poor results until you pack enough in there, but it'll produce a lot of speed and right near your max load it'll all start coming together and shooting well, if my experience with it holds (it did that in my 6.5 creedmoor and my 30-06). I've always had great luck with H4831sc in applications like this too. Not always the fastest, but excellent accuracy and consistency. RL-17 has also worked really well for me, providing a wide window of great accuracy, but it tends to need tuning if you want to stay at top pressure and speed because it has some temperature sensitivity.
the 147 ELDM don't mind a jump to the lands. I'm jumping them 0.040 and seeing great accuracy but from everything I've read, they aren't too picky.
