6.5x284 recoil

How do guys shoot this caliber? Free recoil? Tight hold? No cheek pressure hand held???????????????????????????????????????

The answer depends on the rifle as much as anything else, depending on if it's an F/Open or tactical setup, or a bench rifle.

Mine is set up for F/Open and general long range shooting so it isn't a 50 lb bench rifle. It takes a solid hold, I lean onto the rifle fairly solidly.

Those of us who shoot this cartridge for long range tend to hold on hard. Recoil's really not that bad, comparable to a heavy bullet load in .308, but it will wear you down in a day's prone shooting with a sling if you're not prepared for it physically & mentally.

My F-Class 6.5-284 weighs just under 10Kg,22lbs) and I shoot free recoil always, with 140gn class projectiles and velocities up to about 3040fps. Sometimes there can be some torque effect, but this is usually only when the barrel is fouled. I think handling free recoil well requires practice, and a stock that suits you personally. In my opinion free recoil is a superior method, in that it virtually eliminates the possibility of 'pulling a bad shot'.

I shoot this caliber for 1K Benchrest in my 16.5 lb light gun with a Vais muzzle brake. The brake tames the movement and torque and I shoot 'free recoil' almost completely with this gun.

I keep my shoulder about 1/4 in back from the buttstock, my cheek completely off the stock and just let my thumb rest very lightly on the tang to steady my trigger finger. Any other pressure affects my groups negatively. I use a solid rest system and have found that the less I touch the gun the fewer things I can screw up.

Alan, not sure what country you compete in, but in the US, I've read in long-range.com that you cannot shoot F-Class free recoil; the rules state that you must shoot from the shoulder.

I shoot the 6.5x284 out of a sling in a T2k and do not notice the recoil. But then, I dont really notice it when I am shooting a .308 either as I dont tend to be recoil shy unless its something in the 30 mag range or I am shooting without a sling/coat.

Yeah, there is a bit more there than a 6XC,which I almost classify as NO recoil) but its not even a blip on my recoil radar when I am in a sling and in my shooting coat.

Off a bench, there might be recoil, but I never shoot that way so I cant say for sure.
