6.5x284 Powder Recommendations

I started with WW760 in my XP-100 handgun, then found that Hybrid V-100 gave me 100-125 fps more velocity. That's all I've used for a dozen or so years. Longest deer kill 0f over a dozen beyond 500 yds. was 565 yds.. Taken dozens of game in Africa with this combo including a very big East Cape kudu at 365 yds. with one shot (125 gr. Nos. PT).

I have used N165 in my 6.5-284 for a long time (before H4831 and IMR 4831) but I've been wanting to try Hybrid 100v but never found a jug. I heard of using Retumbo in a 25-06, don't see why it would be too far off in a 6.5-284 if it works well in a 25-06.

Hard to beat H4350 and H4831sc for good accuracy and decent velocities. If you want more speed try N560, MRP or R26. But the latter 2 aren't avaliable.....

H1000 and N565 burn cooler, would be worth trying.

The 5 series of VV powders are not rifle friendly as I see it, they certainly are good and fast but you pay a price, barrel life. I have looked at what will make me giggle and make my 6.5-284 last, and H110v, H1000, N165 or N160 are all I would consider. I understand that a competitor may want to sacrifice life for speed to excel at his sport, that is his decision to make and I truly get it. For me it is not worth the price to pay.

The Hybrid V1000 does work with 130gr Sierra mk in my 6.5-06ai, although I haven’t try it,I bet it would work with the 6.5-284 Norma.

I have read that the VV "N" series double base powders burn hotter.

RL 23 gives good speed and accuracy in my buddy's 1k bench gun with 153.5 LRHTs. Alliant had announced they would no longer sell powder retail but there is a bunch of Alliant powder on Midway now, including RL23. Stopping the wars in Europe may have a side benefit for us powder consumers here in the US...

I agree with the others about double base powders being harder on barrels and RL 23 is double base. I am currently getting really fast speeds with H4350 in a straight 284 with 180s. I'll try H4831SC when I get to it.

There is a general belief that one should use the slowest single base powder that gives the desired speed and accuracy to maximize barrel life. This would say give H1000, H4831, H4350 and the single base Vihrvouri from about N150 - N165 a look too.

We have a Cooper in 6.5 X 284, shooting 140s, and RL22 works great but has been hard to find lately
Try RL23. You won't be disappointed. Same speeds, etc with way better temp stability. I have had 100 fps swings with temperature using RL 19 and RL 22.

Great powder. I've burned a lot of it back when it was priced like everything else but now $619.99 for 8lbs
