6.5x284 Bullet Seating Depth?

This may be an odd question but I am new to precision reloading. What is the minimum seating depth for bullets in the 6.5x284 cartridge? In other words, what is the minimum distance that the case neck should grip the bulled above the boat-tail junction?

Thank you for your help,
Laramiester

In practice with the 6.5x284, seating depth is much less than .264,which is the full length of the neck). I'm not near my reloading stuff at present so can't measure, but mine would be seated between 2/3 and 3/4 of the neck length. If you seat too close to the neck shoulder junction, then you risk "doughnut" problems. My Kiff reamer, made to suit SMK 142) assumes seating will be well short of the neck shoulder junction. Will try to get you a measurement later.

Its later and I have a measurement with 142 SMKs. The boat-tail junction has a seating depth of 0.168, which is just under 2/3 of neck length. I should add that the barrel has done 1500 rounds so the throat is long. With a new barrel the same seating depth measurement would be about 0.050 deeper.

1500rds is a lot for a 6.5-284. How is your accuracy? If its still good can I get your loading details and is there any thing your doing special, such as JB Bore paste etc. to attain this?

Barry,

I have 3 barrels all over 1500,one is 1800). One of the 1500 round Kriegers can still shoot under 1/2MOA at 500yd. It has had moly most of its life. The other 1500 round, identical 1:8.5T 30" Krieger) lets go a flyer,> 1 MOA) every 10 shots, has been since about 1300 - it has never used moly. The 1800 round barrel,NZ Tru-flite) went well to about 1500 using mostly moly, and still doesn't disgrace itself - I bring it out when the conditions are rough.

I use exclusively H4831SC, and either Scenar 139s or SMK 142s. I try to avoid shooting too quickly,F-Class), and prefer abrasive cleaners,e.g. JB) to solvents.

I have 2 new 1:8T Kriegers ready for chambering, but my gunsmith went and broke his arm! So I can thank him for helping me to find out what happens to 6.5x284 barrels after 1500 rounds! :D

HI Allen...you are proof positive that the Krieger bbls will out wear just about everything else....and shoot well while doing it!!! At the nationals last yr the man that won and set several new records was using an old worn out Krieger....they were kidding him about it ...and asking him to take it off of his rifle and "save" it ....yea rite...they knew he was gonna put em to flite....what is the freebore on your reamer and what neck dia....is it a kiff reamer....his seem to work great....it seems like 4831 is the powder to use....thank you for the info....Roger
