6.5x284 build question

I'm getting ready to build a 1000 yd rifle in 6.5x284 and im gonna build it on either a Savage or Remington action. I'm leaning more towards the Remington but would like to know everyone's thoughts on this. What action would you use?

Iif you can afford It, I would suggest you go with a custom action. Like BAT-Stiller-Kelbly (Panda) and so on.

Gary.

Now days for a build on a factory receiver I'd take a hard look at a Savage. The single shot competition/varmint model that is cylindrical from front to back with the smaller port. Makes for a better setup for mounting a one piece rail, I've had too many Remingtons where the receiver was far enough off the rail needed to be shimmed. It is also stiffer than the 700 with its magazine cut out.

Another point is if you blow a primer and flame cut the bolt face, you don't need and entire bolt, just replace the head.

Another point is with the change of a bolt face and an extra cheap barrel you can fire form without using up your good barrel.

And with different bolt heads and barrels you can go to .223, PPC or short magnum on the same receiver.

I have been messing with the savage target actions, I've had good luck and wouldn't hesitate to recommend one. For the money its hard to beat. I was in the same spot as you a while back, I wanted a custom action and couldn't bring myself to spring the extra cash. I kept coming back to a paragraph I read in tony boyers book, he states that the main difference between a trued Remington action (if done right) and a custom is looks and resale value. I've never had the pleasure of shooting a custom action but seeing how my target actions and other trued Remington actions shoot if you work up the right load it would be hard to get much more accuracy, and probably wouldn't be worth it except to the most serious competitors.

We had a practice match today. Everyone else had custom actions, mainly Bernard's.

I was the only one shooting a Savage Target Action. I also had the best score at the end of the practice match.

I have talked to some of the best shooters around. There is nothing wrong with a Target Savage Action. Complement it with a good trigger, stock, and barrel.

Remington foot print all the way. I have savage actions and while I do realize Savage's inherent accuracy, I do not care for their bolt actions. The floating bolt head more than likely accounts for the accuracy but I believe IMO it's an inferior action to the Remington clones. Plus better trigger options are available for the Remington clones. Better over the counter stocks also.
