New to forum and looking for advice

Guys,

I am new to the forum and interested in building my first long range rifle. I have a pre accutrigger Savage 110 chambered in 30-06 and I want to build off the action my first true long range gun. I have mixed opinions regarding the 6.5x284 and the .264 win. mag. I want to use this rifle for a local 1000+ yd shooting clinic and don't want to rule out using it as a hunter any advice is welcome.

My vote goes to the 30-06 in the first place. They can shoot extremely accurate.Ask german salazar.Or look up his homepage.

ndbennett,

I agree with jonbearman, nothing wrong with the 06. The 264 Mag and 6.5 284 are barrel burners. A lot of guys are shoot the 284 for 1000yds. But for myself a I shoot a 6BRX

If I was going to build on your action and was looking at re-barreling (I assume you are) I would strongly consider the .280 or .280 Imp.

They are both easier on barrels than the 6.5X284 and they shoot the super efficient 7mm bullets. You get the best of both worlds - improved ballistics and longer barrel life.

You cant beat the 284, You would want the best brass available for target,
and that would be Lapua, just neck up from 6.5x284.

Lots of good quality bullets available for hunting and target.

Hi ND,hi all
+2 with Jon+1 with Gonzos,of course I understand you would like a (radical) change, but then when you're lucky enough to have a 30-06(which I can't,banned at my place, war caliber)you sort of stick to it...Follow Jon's advice and read German's articles on the 06,they're great. The 280 imp might also fill your bill,I shoot some similar caliber(7x64)and they shoot all right,so get a good barrel, have the whole rig reset by a reliable smith, and you'll never complain....

I'm partial to the 280 Remington. It will run with any of the rounds listed, the brass is cheaper, and no barrel wasted fireforming.

Thanks for the advice guys, I am sticking with the 30-06 after all. Although I have decided to rebuild it. I am going with a Kreiger barrel 26" SS w/ a 1/11 twist, a Jewell trigger, and going to repillar and glass bed the action into the original walnut stock. I am still debating on optics though I am currently looking at the Vortex viper PST 6-24x50 ffp, any opinions?

Thanks again for the help!

ndbennett ......

Here's a good article on making your factory rifle shoot much better. It shows how to get a great after market barrel and know that it will be a very good shooter.
