6.5x284 and IMR-4350

I am looking for some help with a starting load for this combo. My rifle has a 28" Broughton 1-8" barrel and I will be using Fed. 210m's. I think 2900-2950 should be comfortably attainable. I will accept full responsibility for any load I use, so if you do not feel comfortable posting your data for everyone to see, please fell free to PM me.

Thanks,

Lance

I had better luck with slower powders with my 6.5x284. The fastest powder that worked well for me was H4831, but settled on H1000 with 140s in my rifle. I also favored the Extreme line of powder due to IMR powders seeming more temperature sensitive.

I dont doubt that you could find a load with IMR4350, I just believe H4831, H1000 or other slower powders would be "mo betta" in the 6.5x284.

I use IMR4350 in my 6.5x284. I love it, well actually the gun does. I was using Winchester brass, Fed 210Ms and 142 Sierras with 49.5grs. in a 30 inch, 1 in 8 twist. Shot very well at 1,000 at Perry. Talked to several others on the line using the exact same load. 2,960fps. Going to switch to Lapua brass. Dropping the load down first.

FWIW - h4350 - 48.5 gr as a start w/140/142.

should give about 2900-2950, depending.

remember .015 jam on VLD [most time] and on or 'off' lands wyit 142's.

in testing, go up [lor down] .3 grs per group.

you don't need 'mass' vel. to win.

Some 6.5 x 284's will give a sticky bolt lift up at 48.5 + grains of H4350 powder. I would start around 47 - 47.5 gr of H4350. At 48 gr it gives me right around 2975 fps with the 142 Sierras and every so often I get a hint of pressure and sticky bolt lift with that (although accuracy is very good there).

Most LR Prone shooters are running 48 to 49 Grains of 4350. But like Robert mentioned its best to start at that 47gr. If you get a hankerine to shoot H4831 SC drop me a line I have ALOT of Data on a few barrels for that with 140 JLK, 140Berger VLD, 140 BRLR Berger, Sierra 142.
Hope all is well with you dumpin Hogs. Might have to come see you some time.

I have tested IMR4350 and H4350 side by side and H4350 gave slightly faster average FPS (2875 VS 2860). H4350 also gave slightly better speed consistency and accuracy but very little. The accuracy difference was most like the difference in speed and not the powder itself. An increase of .2gr I bet would have shot the same. I use 47gr of H4350 pushing 140gr VLDs at an OAL of 3.24 (lands are at 3.27) to get 2875FPS. I'm very content with these speeds. While they are on the "slow" side for 6.5-284, my groups are 1/4MOA with this load and do just fine at long range. The faster I pushed, the bigger my groups got. My rifle just does not like it past 2900.
