IMR 4155 and 284W

Anyone shooting this combo? Bought some of the 4451 today because I'm not happy with H4831SC and I give up trying to find H4350. Hodgdon's web sight doesn't show data for the 180 hybrid or IMR 4451 in 284W.
I read Rick Jensen's article in the Bulletin but he only mentioned using one charge of 50gns. for the tests. That load looks like its right in the middle of IMR 4350 but I want to be sure before I start.
As a side note, does anyone know if the current Berger manual has data for the 180 and IMR 4451? As always thanks fellas and happy New Year! E

If a reference helps, Im using it in a 6X44BR with 105, 107gr bullets and the load is the same within a 0.1gr of the H4350 loads. Its shoots better for me than the 4350.

I found 4451 to be too fast for the .284 Win and the 180g Hybrids. In this chambering, it was faster than H4350.

IMR4955 is/was a better fit for the 180s and the .284 Win. I found max charge of 4955 with the 180g Scenars (long bearing surface) at 54.5g for a max velocity of 2889 fps. This powder charge is right between the charge nodes for H4831SC (55.3g) and H4350 (51.7g) with the 180g Hybrids in my chamber.

I would also look at RL16 as a replacement for H4350 in .284 Win with the 180s. I plan to load some up soon and see how that combination shoots.

Hope this helps.

Sure wasn't expecting that... what kind of speeds were u seeing? What was ur max charge? I'm not doubting you, I just want to know what I'm up against. E

In the other chambers that I tried 4451 in, it seemed to be the same speed as H4350. However, in the .284 Win with the 180g Hybrids I got significant pressure (hard opening, extractor marks, etc.) at 51g. Therefore, I did not continue working with that powder because it did not have the case fill that I wanted for this load combination.

I am not saying that it will not work (Rick got 2820 fps or so at 50g), but it did not have the case fill that I wanted. I am simply saying that I get the velocity I want with case fill I like with 4955. I think it a better choice.

Thank you kyreloader, I filled a case today w 4831SC and got 66gns in it, same case w I 4451 yielded 64.5gns.
I'm gonna go ahead and try a few around that 50gn mark and see what happens.
Please keep me posted as to how the 4955 works. Thanks E

Range results for yesterdey. Loaded 49.4 to 50.6 of IMR 4155, 180 hy. Match loaded .010 off lands, 284W, BR-2, norma brass w 6 firings, all rounds fired at 200yds w little to no wind.
With the exception of the 49.4 group these look pretty much like the same test using H4831. My chrono stand broke while i was setting it up yesterday so no MVs unfortunatly. There were no signs of pressure, fired case deminsions were allmost the same as the H4831 tests except head space measured .001" longer
I think I'll redo the 49.4 thru 50.0 again but over a crony. What say you? EIMG_0045.JPG
