A neighbor stopped by and asked how to get the bolt out of the gun his father passed on to him. A old Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55 in really nice shape. Sure don't seem to haver been fired much.Told him what I knew of them and talked him into hunting deer with it this fall...
Any idea of the age ? Serial #

Nice old gun! From what I’ve seen, the style of the serial number script makes it an early gun. Probably early in the century around WW1. Just my guess.
 
I believe the 1906 is the mfg date. Nice rifle!

From Google:
The "JV" marking in front of the serial number on a Swedish Mauser indicates the initials of the inspection officer, specifically Paul Jacques Robert Virgin. He served as the Inspection Officer at the Carl Gustaf Stads Gevärsfaktori from October 1, 1905, to September 31, 1911.
 
How long do you estimate the barrel is? From that angle on the 4wheeler it looks short. They made a cavalry rifle, just like the infantry rifle but with very short barrel and stock. Look up 1894 Swede.

M96 SWEDISH MAUSER!! 29.5" long barrel or long gun!!!
1906 SERIAL NUMBER RANGE 177588-201238 23,650 MADE THAT YEAR!!
NOT A M94 (Carbine , 17.7" tube) 1906 SN RANGE 37728 - 38420
NOT A M38 (Infantry, Calvert, 24" barrel) PRODUCTION START: 1938!!!
NOT A M41 ("Arctic Predator", Sniper, 29" 4 groove) PRODUCTION START: 1941!!!

BRASS STOCK DISK INFO:
SMALL PIE 1 MARKED OF 3 DIGITS: CLEAN BORE WITH LITTLE RUST OR PITTING!
LARGE PIE: BORE WAS 6.49mm and was later inspected to 6.50mm!!! Perfect bore!!!
MEDIUM PIE: Boat Tail Bullet hold over: 0!! No number stamped in that pie!!!

If the muzzle has threads on the outside, it is for screwing on a bullet shredder for tearing up practice loads with wooden bullets!!!
If the gun has the threading, it is classified has a M96B!!!

Now the important part of Swedish Mausers are matching numbers on all parts!! The matching parts will be STAMPED with the last three digits of the serial number!! 812 in this case!!! The bolt handle knob, the bolt release, the manual pull on the firing pin, the safety lever, the box magazine, trigger guard, the 2 barrel bands, the rear sights, the barrel, butt plate, and inside the stock and forearm guard (the wood maybe stamped with the last 4 or 5 digits of the SN)!!! The cleaning rod number does not matter!!!!

The wood should be American and/or Mediterranean Walnut!!!!

NOW THE BAD NEWS!!! THE BOLT SHOULD BE STRAIGHT, NOT CURVED!! TURN DOWN BOLTS (not curved) WERE MADE ON MOST OF THE M38s!!! The butt plate is missing!!! Hopefully the barrel measures 29-1/2"!!!!! Looks short from the pix angle!!!

The small ring Swedish Mauser is designed for less than 48000PSI!!
It can't handle high pressure 6.5x55 modern day loads!!
Make sure the factory ammo states 6.5x55 SWEDE!!!

Your Swedish Mauser was made in Germany!!!! The Carl Gustafs factory in Sweden, was still working on the machines and tooling (Gearing Up)!! 38,600 M96 were made from 1899-1900 at the Waffenabrik Mauser facility in Oberndorf, Germany!!! The Mauser brothers work this out with the King of Sweden who wanted his troops to have this new, modern at the time, rifles!!! I have a CG-63 (Carl Gustafs factory modified target variant of the M96 made in 1965) with a 1900 Waffenabrik receiver and match bolt!!! The Target barrel was made by NORMA!!!! Yeah, A 29.5" long Palma contour barrel in 6.5x55!!!!

The stock disc shows the condition of the barrel and the hold over on the sights for shooting the new, at that time, Boat tail bullets!!!! See post 11!!!!

Looks like the butt plate is there.
 
if barrel is approximately 24” long might be a M96/38 conversion although I thought most of them retained the straight bolt handle. Also, receiver clearly stamped Carl Gustav which should indicate a Swedish built rifle
 
Those m96 rifles are fantastic. As others have pointed out, yours is Swedish manufactur in 1906. (The first few years were German contract until the tooling got set up.). They are very accurate and smooth shooting rifle. The longer barrel helps with recoil and muzzle jump.
As far as rated loads, these were rated at Cup ( copper units of pressure) which is a lower (numerically)rating than Sami spec used in America. So a 48k cup rating is 53k psi. Most ammo makers handicap loads right around that mark. The Mauser actions are also proof tested at 125%, often exceeding 65kpsi.

Good analysis rfwind!! That is why it looks short!!! The M96-38 was a cut down M96 retaining the straight bolt!! The Carl Gustafs factory was geared up to make machine guns in 1937!!! The Husky (Husqvarna sporting rifles) was producing the M38 with turn down bolt!!!
