6.5 x 47 Lapua and the Hornady 147 ELDM bullet - MV Test Data

What sort of velocity are people getting with Sierra 6.5mm 150 grain HPBT (#1755) in the 6.5x47..? I ask as it in the same mass range as the 147s and I’ve just received 100 for Christmas

I’m currently running 140 Berger Hybrids.

Thanks in advance.

Paul

As this thread covers, it depends on your freebore, powder charge and barrel length, but I bet with a 150 grainer you could get within 30 fps of:

RL-17 - 39.7 2789 fps

N550 - 39.2 2773 fps

H414 - 39.7 2742 fps

I have a 28" Kreiger 4 groove 7.5 twist and started playing with some loads with RL 16 and 150 Smk. My speeds were from 2700 to 2760 with no pressure signs.

Thanks for the data
I’m running a 31” Bartline 5R in 7.5 twist. The barrel is throated very long specially for the heavyweight projectiles with long bearing surfaces. Downside is even some of the 140 offerings have to much jump, upside is it keeps the pressures reasonable/manageable and throws them fast.
I’ll see if I can get a little range time this weekend to try out the 150 SMK and post up what I get.

My 6.5x47L loves the Horny 140 ELDM's with Varget. I get 100 yard groups in the .2 -.3 all the time with awesome SD/ES. Shot a 600 yard F class match last weekend and scored 196 and 7X. The rifle is a Savage 110 tactical i bought on line and came as a 308. Screwed on a 26" SS douglas heavy barrel from Stan Taylor and the rest of the rifle is stock.

You were told that barrel was boring, are you bored yet?..........LOL

Loaded some 147 ELDMs up and made the BTO lengths based on the prior seating test.

Shot it today at 300yards. Mirage was really bad, so bad...that I considered not doing the test, but.. I did it anyway.

39.8 grains of RL-17 shot surprisingly good, but I had a little heavy bolt lift on all 15 rounds.

20 rounds at 39.0 grains did not shoot so well, but no bolt lift resistance.

So, I can live with 1" groups @ 300 yards, for 600 yard F-Open competition, if they shoot consistently. Problem is the bolt lift. It was only 50F degrees today! Whats the bolt lift gonna be when it is a 100F degrees?

Load it down to 39.7? 39.6? and retest it at 300?

I settled on 39.2 grains of RL-16 with the 147 ELD-M in my x47 last year as my long range load. Loaded to 2.765” and running around 2715. Maybe not as accurate as Berger’s during load work ups at 100 but the ELD’s are not bad and are always in stock locally as well as being quite a bit cheaper. I’m continually testing others but keep coming back to the 147’s and RL-16 for 1000 yards. Never had a problem with bullet blow up but I don’t shoot when it’s really hot here. Much too humid to be enjoyable.

G&W This cannot be correct?

When I load 39.2 gr of RL-16 into the 6.5x47 case the OAL is 2.920” with the 147ELDM bullet.

What am I missing?

Not sure, but this is what I have been using for consistent long range accuracy. Are you using a drop tube?
