6.5 X 284, RL-22 VV N560...?

Extremely hard to find right now but H1000 and Retumbo have always been top performers for me in the 6.5-284. I recently found a pound of N560 to try and it shot decent but never really tightened up for me at any charge weight with 140 Bergers.

I think H1000 can be found on the shelf right next to hens teeth.
I read some older posts of folks running 52-52.2gr of RL22, both with and without success.

Yes when I first started using 23 and could not find data I was told to use data for 22 so I think they would be comparable,

It's a bummer Alliant doesn't list this cartridge as popular as it is.

What would be a good starting/stopping point using RL22 in the 6.5-284?
I'll be running 136scenar L's.

I'm saving my H4831SC for my Creedmoor, and kinda want to save my H4350 also.
I've got close to 4# of the RL22 and this cartridge seems like a good place to use it up.

Late to reply, but some info. I can't compare RL-22 to 4831sc, as the temps changed and MOA holdovers did, as well. 139 Scenars. RL-22 - excellent accuracy. I would not hesitate to use RL22 in the 6.5 X 284. I don't use wind flags, chrono; so seat of the pants flying.

RL 23’s powder node was 50.3.


H4831SC node was 51.4


H1000 ended up at 54.8

I know this isn’t the same bullet as what your gonna run but it will at least give you a comparison to start with. In my testing, RL22’s powder charge will run closer to H4831 but with more velocity.

My 65x284 shoots Berger 140 hybrid best 0.002 in
I thought it was shooting Berger 153.5 good 1/2” @ 100

When I was shooting at 100 yards to the zero rifle with a new load 140 burgers I seen a hole up here on paper loaded another one shot did not say how are you here right now no I either missed the whole target so I shot another one same thing did not see a whole a pair or the whole get bigger so I thought to myself damn they’re blowing up and made air shot two more and the whole got slightly bigger quarter-inch don’t care if you believe me or not because I really did not believe it myself.
until I took it to 500 and shot a 1 inch group 3 shots and quit
Went back the next day same thing 500 yards three shots one inch two was a half inch third one opened it up to an inch same thing said I’m not shooting two more pact up went home three days later went back same thing 1 inch at 500 yards I’m putting the gun up I have what they call a Hummer

Found 400 Berger 144 LRHT
Same load did not like them very shocking and pissed off!
Would like to trade 300 of them for 140 Berger hybrids

but the 144 LRHT Shoot in the threes in my 65 Creedmoor using the same road as the one for the hybrid funny how they don’t work in the 65x284 i’m sure I could get them to shoot but I’m not messing around burning out in my barrel when it is shooting the 140s with bench rest precision.

Hi everyone I'm new to the channel and new to the 6.5-.284. I recently bought a heavy gun chamber in 6.5-284 with the .285 neck. My question is would that be normal for that
caliber to have such a tight neck? Or should I get that chamber opened up.

My 6.5 X 284 has .298" neck.
I told the gunsmith that I wanted to (and do) shoot Lapua brass, and thus the neck is .298". Fwiw!

Have burned out 4 barrels with N560

This is a pretty 'hot' number. In the UK/Europe, Viht N165 is the overwhelming choice for this cartridge with 139s and heavier. It performs well as long as you don't need ultimate MVs and is a very cool burner extending barrel life noticeably. The new N565 might work well too here, but I've yet to hear of anyone trying it. Not that there are many 6.5-284 users left here these days as we hardly ever see it in F-Class and it has lost support in 1,000 yard BR too.
