6.5 wolf pup- NOBODY?

Anybody know if the 6.5 wolf pup will push a 130gr vld to the upper 2900fps range? Or is the WSSM the next logical step to a short fat case? Really like the idea of the no neck design for 1000yd br.

Thanks, I sent Al a pm with no response (must be busy shooting) a few days before I posted this inquirery. Thanks for the link Marine, I see that the case holds 45.7 gr water, as I imagined it is probably capable of pushing a 130gr 6.5cal to 3k in a 30" 1-8.25 twist barrel.

Just wondering if anyone here had any experience with it being necked down to 6.5

Thanks for the replys I will try and contact Stan.

I can see what the developers were trying to accomplish in 30 caliber using light flat based bullets for hunter class BR.

Taking it to 6.5mm with an .080" neck would reduce the capacity from the case forming gains the wolf pup developers obtained since the boat tail on a 130 vld would be below the neck shoulder junction. In the end, a whole lot of fuss when you can start with the 6.5x47 Lapua.

I can tell you from experience a 6.5 BR wont push a 130 vld at 2900 fps in a 30 inch barrel (not even close), but a 6.5x47 will push a 130 comfortably at 2950 fps using RL-15 or Varget. I have also shot the 6.5x47 in both 28 and 30 inch barrels and saw no gain of significance using a 30 over a 28,,, the case has just run out of steam. I did get higher velocity with RL-17, but the groups were nowhere as tight as using RL-15 or varget.

If you really want a "short fat" case, I run 108's in the 6.5 PPCX at 3000 fps using N530. 114 vlds run a very slight bit slower. I have also used N530 in the 6.5x47 with lighter bullets and obtained very strong velocities, but it is too fast a powder to use with the 130.

What is wrong with the 6.5 Creedmore? I know the hornady brass isn't the best, but lapua makes 22-250 and .308 brass which can easily be made to work in the 6.5.

Or run the 6.5X47 like TX65 suggested. There is really no sense in reinventing the wheel when there are several rounds readily available that will perform to your expectations.

Or if you really want to get something new going, blow the shoulder forward on the Grendel and make that work. It's a good accurate round, and is based on the PPC. It's short and fat, and has enough neck that you could potentially move the shoulder a bit and get more velocity.

The wssm case is plagued by brass that sucks out loud. It's thick, hard, and more people have issues with it than you would believe. I looked into it as I wanted a 7WSSM and the general consensus was that the brass just sucks and will make life difficult. If there were hope to be had, many more would be using WSSM wildcats or even the parent round in BR. It really becomes clear when you think about this short fat case that looks so good, and then think about how few people are actually using it. There has to be a reason for the lack of use, and sucky brass is probably at the top of the list.

Thanks for the input guys. I started shooting 1000yd BR about ten years ago and am certainly not looking to re-invent the wheel. Tried that in 2000 with a 6.5 wsm it shot small groups for a while. Just looking to use the short fat case with adding the no neck principle that Stan used with the wolf pup.

Not sure about the grendal. Besides I don't have a bolt face that size. And not sure if it has the capacity for 1000yd BR. Don't know anything about it. As for the wssm it does seem as if brass is an issue. However, Martin Daily of the PA 1000yard club has done quite well with one. I believe Boyd Heaton has too.

As for the Creedmore, its what I'd use in a tactical rifle but not for 1000yd br. Thanks.

Tx65. Good info Thanks.
