6.5 which one?

Bart The case capacity of a 6.5-47 Lap case is 48.8, 260 Remington is 53. Hodgdon list a max load of 40.1 grains for 6.5-47 and a max of 42 grains for the 260 Rem of H4350 both loaded with 140 grain bullets.

My personal preference is the 6.5-284. Yes, it can be a barrel burner if you tend to shoot hot loads, that being said, you can develop loads that provide great long distance accuracy that are not barrel burners. The large case capacity allows you to develop loads over a wide range of velocities.

Zombie thread alert! (this is a 2008 thread!)

Listed by case capacity: 260Rem, 6.5 Creedmoor and 6.5x47 Lapua, respectively in gr-H20 approx 53.5, 52.5, 48.8.

In practical terms they are all pretty much ballistic triplets by about every evaluation criteria and test I've seen published over the last few yrs.

  • If you want to buy match grade ammo off the shelf, get the Creedmoor.
  • If you want to load 140gr bullets at mag length consider the Creedmoor or the Lapua, both are shorter cases than the 260 and give you more room to seat the longer heavy for class bullets in a magazine. If I were going there I think I'd probably do the Lapua.

Personally, if I was going to go down the 260Rem path I'd do a 260SLR instead. I've already done a 6SLR so I get how simple it is. You end up getting the same capacity (at least in the 6SLR/243 variant) but with 30* shoulders and no fire forming and you can use any 260 brass to get there.

There is a lot of support out there for the Creedmoor, it's the popular kid in school right now.

Interesting, the two sites I checked had them reversed. Both are close in barrel lives.

I think 6.5x55 se on a modern action and custom chamber is still very very hard to beat.

I get 2950 fps no problems and my gun patterns very good at 1k.

RHINOUT!

6.5x55AI Good barrel life, great accuracy, mine likes 130>142gr bullets and 4831SC powder.

I'm planning on getting a 6.5 Grendel for my AR soon. Since hearing about the cartridge I have become very intrested in 6.5 calibers. I have a 243 and am planning on getting it reabarreled in a 6.5 but not sure which one.

Speed is not a real big deal to me but would also like something that is not really hard on barrels. I would also like a caliber that brass is availabe for and would not have to make. I would like to start shooting at longer ranges 500-1000 yard. Would appericate any thoughts and advice. Thanks,

Rhys
On a short action I would go with the 6.5 x 47 Lapua for the long action I personally own a 6. 5 x 2 84 norma
