Questions about 6.5 creed chamber

Planning to order a barrel in 6.5 creedmoor. Plan to use long heavy bullets like the 140 amax. Also I've heard lapua brass is a little thicker. Guess my questions are about neck dimensions, freebore and leade ect. Thoughts.

Lapua does not make brass for the 6.5Creedmoor. They do however make a cartradge called the 6.5x47 that has identical performance and is much more accurate. Not to mention it's cheaper to reload for.

Thanx Grimstod, but there you go throwing me of my choice again. First I was set for 7-08, now the creed. This barrel is going on a trued 700 action. There are so many 6.5s out there. I'd like to get out to 1000 someday. How about a short list of 6.5s in short action. Thanx again. Mike

I'll double the 6.5x47L. Almost the same as creedmoor but with less powder. Also very fine lapua brass with small primers. What more could you ask for! Oh, and not a barrel burner.

I'm using 22-250 Lapua brass in my 6.5 Creedmoor .just expanding the neck , add the powder of your choice , seat a 140 match king "jammed" in the lands & fire form while you're doing your break in & scope adjustment . I have a load if you need it .... fire forming & my final load w/ 140 Berger hunting.
BTW I tried the pistol powder, cream of wheat & cotton ball method of fire forming 1st...Holy fire balls ! It worked but the barrel still got hot & I had a flaming cotton / cream of wheat snow storm . I'd rather just go ahead & shoot a real bullet.

Oh my brain hurts. If 6.5x47 and you were having a barrel made would you have anything done to the camber. ie a longer throat. Long bullets and 1000 yards

Holy fire balls. I got a good laugh out of that one. I've never fire formed but I can picture a funny YouTube video out of that one. Thing is it seems to me stretching the neck that much would make it thin. Why not just buy the brass. I'm ignorant. Is that a stupid question?

I've been shooting a 6.5 creedmoor for a couple years now. As much as I like the 6.5x47, shooting them in a shorter barrel (less than 28") and 140gr bullets, the velocities are actually noticeably less than the 6.5 creedmoor.

Accuracy wise, I think they are the same. My 6.5 creedmoor shoots really well.

Just go with the standard 6.5 creedmoor reamer. This shoots the 140 hybrids and A-Max's well. I think the "standard" reamer was set up for the A-Max by the way.

A lot of people poopoo on the Hornady brass, but I have had zero, nada, zilch, issues with it and it is MUCH cheaper than Nosler brass.

Now we're talking especially as my barrel will be 24". Really thanx for the reamer info. And as this will be my first ever custom barrel Im not into fire forming. For sure not going to jam anything in it and the burning of cotton/wheat could cause an oxidation of the metallurgy due to molecular breakdown of the atomic structure

I did buy the Hornady brass....weight sorting it was disastrous so I went for other resources..I see Nosler & maybe Norma is making brass for the Creedmoor now.
Lapua is top of the line & I've not had any issues with thin necks. Also can't tell that the media was any harder on the barrel than copper jacket material or powder goin down the tube. This McGowen barrel really shoots...Almost cover a group @ 1000 yards with a skoal can...Takes 24.5 MOA on the Nightforce to get there. Went to 6700' elevation & shot 1244 yards...took 33.75 MOA to get that done. Wind & atmospheric conditions are the only hard part with this rig as is with any long range set up.

I would highly recomend the Lapua 6.5x47. The 6.5CMoor is to expensive. 100 peices of it cost 68$ but they only last at best 10 reloads. Thats a cost of 6.8cents per shot. While Lapuas 6.5x47 Lapua can handle 25 reloads and many often get 30-35. That means it only costs $0.04 per reload.

Also the primers are smaller and less expensive. With the Lapua.

As for accuracy. No important records in accuracy have been set with the Creedmoor. The 6.5x47 though has a slew of awwards amd reccords. The accuracy of a case is best judged by the bench rest competitions it wins. And in that area its hands down the Lapua.

I am not bashing the CM. It is a good cartradge if you only shoot factory ammo. But if you hand load. You will be much happier with the Lapua.

Some will say the CM is faster. Dont listen to this. They are not compensating for the fact that the Lapua is a higher presure case and even though its a tinny bit smaller it can reach the same MV. Best accuracy nodes with Both cartradges are usually found around 2800 with both cartradges. If your ahooting 140s

You will need about .120 of freebore. Mine has .110 but I a set up for 120gr bullets.

Ok your choices are 6.5x47 6.5Creedmoor, Rem260 and Rem 260AI
