6.5 what?

Joe,

I took that capacity from the site I referenced above. I'll check with a few people on here shooting it. I think the shoulder is blown out as well as forward. I'll check my reamer prints when I get home.

Terry

Not definitive, but looking at two reamer prints,

260 has a shoulder diameter of .455
260AI has a shoulder diameter of .459
6.5SLR has a shoulder diameter of 4545

Makes sense that it's slightly less capacity than the straight 260.

I'll reach out to a few who use the 6.5SLR to see what they're finding for h2o capacity and let you all know.

hello. I'm having a short action standard bolt face rifle built (for long range practice).
6.5x47 - want to use 140 bullets and don't think it has enough powder space
6.5 creedmor - I don't like hornady brass
260 rem- I like it but shoulder angles and short neck (bullet seats in powder space)
260 ackley- don't want to fire form (I don't think I'm ready for that)
6.5slr - I really like that but can it be just as accurate as the others listed above?
Win brass with a light neck turn, would that help? Do you know anyone that
Has one and likes / dislikes it and why?
I'm open to any suggestions.
Thanks for your help

Let me ask a question that I haven't seen yet. Are you concerned about feeding from a magazine or are you looking to maximize long range performance?

Knowing this may help guide your choice.

My 260AI is a single shot so I can seat the bullets without regard for a maximum length constraint.

It will have a magazine. Not sure what the 260 or 260 ackley oal is.
For those that have the ackley do you use luapa brass?

You can use either Lapua .308 Palma brass or "regular" Lapua .260 brass. I use both. However, as far as straight up and down excellent brass is concerned, my vote goes for the "regular" .260 Lapua brass. I am about 1/2 way thru my 2nd .260A.I. barrel and I am using the exact same pieces of brass I started with, and I see no end in sight! I have NO IDEA how many good reloads you can get out of that brass, but it must be substantial!

Concerning 6.5 SLR capacity, I just got this back from another member of this site.

"Win brass a buddy of mine is working on for his 6.5SLR is rite on 55gr"

Don't let the 260 worry you. There great. Now with the new 147 Hornady eld-m coming out, it's gonna shine. Check out its BC number. Many more 6.5 fans will hitting the ranges all over the country toting the various 6.5 cartridges.

Magazine length needs to be taken into consideration. If you are using AI. mags you will be limited to about 2.85 oal length. 6.5 x 47L is the obvious choice and would be mine for what you want to do.:D

Have to agree with pierce , here's the thing... If you merely want to shoot 140's at a speed that on paper bucks the wind that is all fine and dandy.... Truth of the matter is with a 140class bullet in 6.5 you are going to see an accuracy decline once you surpass the 2900-2950fps zone... Don't take my word for it , this is why many of us dropped the 6.5 Hoyer (6.5x300wthby) years ago... there is no need to push a 140 at 3200+ if you are in search of absolute precision.
The 6.5x284 is another one that can be built specifically to shoot 140's past the 3000fps zone but the sweet spot is not alot past 3000fps.

Again , good luck.

Yep you definitely are correct. My 6.5-284 shoots it's very best at 2975-3050. Depending on what powder I feed it. My 260 is around 2830-2850. That's a fact.

My 6.5wssm imp matches the 260AI capacity. My chosen node is 3025fps with 140s & 28" barrel.
I found a higher node way up in 32XX but it was not as accurate.
I don't know if nodes in the 28XXs are more accurate or not, but I doubt it with this cartridge.

I was like you trying to make up my mind. thank god a friend let me shoot his 6.5x47 and I was sold!! I built up a gun and it will shoot all weight bergers the same. I love the 140 hybreds and shoot this out to 1400yds. I am on my 31st reload on laupa brass and havent had to trim yet.the only trouble I have had is trying to fine h-4350 that this gun loves but hates imr-4350. I won a shoot 3 months ago @ 1400yds. only person to hit 18in plate 4 out of 5 times.

That's a great bit of information on lapua brass. 31 loads on a cartridge. That's awesome. That's also commendable shooting an a 1400 yard target with that 6.5-47. It's running out of gas by then and wind affects it at that point.
