6.5 Varmint Bullet

i am starting to work with a 6.5x284 and was wondering what is the best bullet for varmints in this caliber . By the way my gun has a 1n8'' twist Pac-nor . Thanks for any input .

90 TNT's mgiht work- they are a varmint projectile but the 6.5/284 might push them a bit fast for jacket integrety
85 sierra a mate of min with a 6.5x55 swaers by

I also like the 107 Sierra and the 108 Scenar

not forgetting the 100 NBT

I found the Sierra 100gr HP Varminter bullet to be a winner in my .260 Rem. Low cost, very, very accurate, and hits hard for the weight. If you need a higher BC, look at the Hornady 95gr V-Max, Hornady item 22601.

I am wanting a heavier bullet to shoot long range with, i was thinking about the 140gr class bullets and wasn't sure which one might be best . Between the Berger, Sierra, or the Hornady and maybe even the Lapua .

It is a pity there are no Nosler Ballistic Tip Varmint or Sierra BlitzKing 6.5mm bullets.

Hornady is there of course with a VMax, but they need some company.

I played with a ballistic calculator for the 95gr VMax at moderate velocities such as might be attained by the 6.5x47L, and the numbers out past 600yds look pretty good, so unless your distance requirements are extreme, lighter bullets might do fine.

Nolser does make a Ballistic tip bullet in 6.5mm, two in fact. They are listed as "Ballistic Tip Hunting" in 100gr and 120gr. I've shot the 120 grain. It is very accurate, easy to tune for, but pricey. With a .458 BC, I think this would be a good choice for you--or try the 140 Amax. With the plastic tips, these expand well.

I wrote Ballistic Tip Varmint, not Ballistic Tip Hunting.
Nosler makes no Ballistic Tip Varmint in 6.5mm.

The largest they go in Ballistic Tip Varmint is 25 cal.

Thanks for all of the suggestions Paul i think that i will use the 140gr A-max or the 140gr Berger . Although the Nosler does lokk pretty good, if i thought i could get alot more velocity out of the BT i would like to try it . :thumb:

Does anyone know what the difference is between the Varmint and Hunting type ballistic tips.

I used to shoot the 55gr Ballistic Tip in a 22-250, but after trying some V-Max's I found that the V-Max's seem to be way more explosive.

So I am wondering did I use the wrong type Ballistic Tip in .224.

That's a surprise - 50gr Ballistic,Silver)Tip in a 223 were quite explosive on foxes. I wasn't expecting that much from a 223. There was some discussion in the field that day about whether the 1 in 8 twist,Tikka T3 Super Varmint) was contributing to the explosiveness.

Any chance the BT damage was largely internal to the body cavity?

No, you are on safe ground there - all .224 Ballistic Tips are Varmint type.

There is a very brief description of the differences here:

My friend a dog hunting partner shoots a 65X284 Shehane and is using the 95g Vmax. It is a BOMB out to 5-600 yards, throws dogs like my 223 AI does at 200.

I use the Nosler 120 grain ballistic tip hunting bullet in my 6.5X47 on coyotes and ground squirrels and it is devastating on both. I find is is good at almost any range out to 600+ yds. I believe it's bc contributes to good wind bucking characteristics.
